Time off for a funeral

Could anybody tell me how much time we get off for a family funeral, my mum died on Christmas Eve and she was 92 and it was kind of expected even so obviously I was a bit upset I took the 27th off work as a day for bereave meant and the 28 was my day off I then came in the following day so I only had one day off for grieving. I asked my manager for a day off next week for the funeral which of course he said no problem I said could I then have two days off as I’m expected to stay over and it’s about A one hour drive he said he can only give me one day off and as we are really short next week he couldn’t give me any more time off is this true surely I thought more than one day for a family funeral as it was my mother would be okay? I did ask him again and he said he’d have to look into it but it’s unlikely as we are so shortstaffed at the moment!

Take as long as you need personally took 5weeks when my mum died your manager must be a heartless sorry cant even write what i think of him..

Bereavement: It’s an upsetting time when someone close to you passes away. Managers will do their best
to allow you time to deal with your loss.
• Your manager can provide you with up to one week’s paid leave for immediate family, e.g. next of kin or
blood relative (spouse, civil partner, child, parent or sibling), to support you during this difficult time.
• If a member of your family, e.g. grandparent or parent-in-law passes away, your manager can give you
one day’s paid leave to attend the funeral.
• For wider family or friends, you can agree with your manager whether to swap shifts, make up the
time, take unpaid leave or holiday

Yes I think He is, he is also a standing manager as our manager is off for awhile and I don’t think he actually understand what he should be doing. But I will now push him for days off thanks

Just take days off or weeks let him worry.. again should have said earlier sorry for loss of your mum..

Think a lot of managers try to give as little time off as they can by interpreting literally the wording in the policy which says:

'can' give time off rather than 'must' or 'will' give time off.......

yes I know what you mean, as it is five days paid leave which can be provided as it quotes my manager should be there for I take it given me two days paid leave which I have asked for he tells me we are so shortstaffed and is happy for me just to take the one day as I have already had one days paid leave so I am right in thinking that they have to if I request it paid me up to 5 days leave my manager doesn’t seem to think this is right?
