Why is lapsing outdoor only?

Post by NewPostieUK »

Or, to put it another way, why do you do the same lapsing if you work 5 hours a day, 6 or 8?

Lets say it's so easy, you have 5 mins spare for every hour you work. If you work 5 hours a day that 5x5= 25 mins scope to do some lapsing. If you work 8 hours a day that 8x5= 40 mins in which you can do lapsing and still finish on time.

How is lapsing worked out? One 30 hr duty I cover has 70 houses which I struggle to get in one bag, and usually it takes around 40 mins. Another duty which is usually done by a full timer, has 45 houses literally across the road, and they get no packets and very little mail. Half a bundle.

I'm talking about what management expect you to do, having worked it out. I know you can say no if you don't have the time, or you can claim or cut off.

You answered your own question , if you have time to do it then fine , if you don’t then you don’t .There is no real structure to the way managers approach lapsing , they can sometimes get people to take it and sometimes they can’t.If posties want to get in early take no breaks then lapse then more fool them .

You only lapse if you have the time to do it. It doesn't matter what time you finished yesterday or last week because thats irrelevant to the mail/packets that you might have for today. It doesn't matter what your manager thinks you are capable of either because they are not doing the delivery.

Managers will try to lapse a duty and say that its fair because everyone does a similar number of calls. But does every duty have the same number of calls??
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

It's due to staffing. Lapsing should be done indoor. But it's easier for managers to not bother working these things out.

Short answer is if you know how long the absorption/lapsing will take and how long it takes to do your walk and there isn't time to do it follow the legendary cutting off procedure.
We are still effectively at war so the ideal situation is for ALL the posties in your DO to start on time and not before and take all their breaks. This isn't always possible though.
Nearly impossible to make pieces of absorption the same length so there will always be bad and easy sections. Absorption is usually done on P&L walks with housing estates etc so people generally aren't in resulting in most parcels having to be 739d and brought back which makes the job even longer to complete.

it everybody started on time and used the methods and take breaks then there would be no time to do any lapsing , and if they try it this would cause massive cut offs or cost the company money for excess claims but you cant tell some people , :arrrghhh

Same in our DO I'm afraid . One or two posties do it properly but we still cannot reach consensus so everyone does the job properly.

I think that's a good question, but what indoor work is there to be lapsed?

Got a few of these types in ours too, they seem intelligent enough to work it out but just can’t seem to grasp it.

Yeh, bang on !
How do they fill in the spare time accrued in their working day ?, considering they never work a full day EVER.
What became of the idea to have DOMs covering two offices? Savings do not seem to impact on their work loads or bonus system.

Well, it doesn't have to be indoor work, just more work. If their indoor hours aren't filled, and they have time to load their van and get out an hour early, then surely they should do more lapsing than a part timer who isn't even in the building yet?
