Callers office

Done 18 yrs on and off in callers office
Want to do it permanently and get off my walk due to back problems
But staff members with less seniority and 35 years younger than me always seem to get the job.
How can this happen

It's probably classed as a specialist duty so AFAIK it's not just done on seniority alone

But I have manned the office doing every job in there when others were on strike I know the job back to front and upside down
I also in my other jobs gained the necessary skills to do this job and the late Phg taught me the job also.
Yet still management put people in there that have no experience whatsoever and have only been with royal mail for a couple of months
No good talking to our union guy about it because well he's not interested in listening
Maybe I should just carry on doing a walk I really am not fit for until I retire that seems to be my only option

Non members are perfectly entitled to ask a question.
It would be a piss poor rep who wouldn't advise.
Unless you engage with non members how would they ever see the error of their ways?

In that case, you may grounds for a grievance.

Yes, the caller's office is a skill-based selection, but when the job comes up anyone who applies can be considered, if they have the correct skills and pass the interview stage I think then the most senior qualified person should be selected.

However, if they are putting new starters in there on a temporary basis only, then in my view there would be no grounds for a grievance as it is a resourcing issue, not a selection or skill issue as it would be for a permanent duty selection.

They gave the callers office job to a young lad who only had 3 years in the job as he was apparently the most qualified for the job as it went on suitability instead of seniority.

There was a whole interview process for the job did ago ever applied for it.

I think the main reason he got it was they can chuck him on delivery when somebody can’t do there delivery so much for it being a speciality job.
