Sorry but no, there is no central number. You need to contact your manager as you would if you were in the UK. All you need to do is find the UK dialling code for the country and perhaps drop the first 0 in the UK area code.

My friend is abroad and has been given the number from the manager. Only, the number does not work 0800 622 840

That's the Incident Reporting number for accidents involving contractors I think ?

Simply drop the leading 0 when calling from outside the UK and add either +44 or 0044. For example you could use +44800 043 0800 or 0044800 043 0800. When calling from abroad the call is unfortunately no longer free and you will be charged a pence per minute rate depending on the telecoms provider.

Do 0800 numbers work from abroad? I have my doubts , that's why if you look at your bank card ,for example it gives you an alternative number to call from abroad.

There is no law that states you can not go abroad/on holiday when on the sick! For all you know this person could be off with stress/depression and could have been told by their Dr to take some time away to chill out and make them feel better instead of being given some medication or they could have some medical condition that they have decide to travel abroad to treat as they can't get treated over here for a long time. So let's not jump to the conclusion they have just gone "sick" just to go away
