I think you should approach a manager once prep is completed on every occasion that you are not 100% that you will complete.
If that is every single day then so be it.

The instructions are very clear, after prep. If it takes you 40 mins, an hour, 2 hours after that to actually get out on delivery its up to the manager to take this also into account before deciding what needs to be done.

OK, thanks for that. With that bold bit in mind, thats actually what i'm really getting at.Postie45 wrote:The instructions are very clear, after prep. After prep, you tell line manager that you will not be able to complete duty, and the manager asks you at that point 'how many loops/parcels will you need to leave'. It really is a question that's extremely hard to answer at this time of year. So what you are saying is you could give a figure of say, 3 loops, with the condition that I leave the office at 'X' time.

id always slighty overestimate how much i need to leave to be safe if i need to finish on time. If the manager isnt happy with that then he can tell you what to take and you will say something like "ok but i doubt ill get that far" at this point you have covered yourself if you still bring some back, also best to do it in front of a witness too.

As usual my standard comment applies: " Every DO runs differently with a differing interpretation of the rules".
The overrunning procedure is poorly written, badly implemented, and not fit for purpose. Likewise the way RM determines how much and when we are paid, if and when and how much and at what rate overtime is paid is also broken.
Personally I am happy to get everything delivered each day because I am loyal to the customer, whom RM calls the 'recipient', and to those I work with but not to those at the top of the tree who run the business in such a terrible fashion. Therefore I am more interested in seeing every minute of work paid which still doesn't happen in this business. Even with so much work being completed unpaid the bosses can still not supposedly turn a decent profit. I acknowledge the likes of DSA and unfair competition kick RM in the teeth but even so RM does not advertise our business and makes bad decisions such as investing in failing foreign courier companies etc.

I'd suggest AFTER you've Thrown EVERYTHING Off, and done your Redirections. So you're just ready to Tie Up. The idea is that the DOM can come around to your Frame and actually see how much mail you've got. To Late if it's all in trays, and bags, and if it's tied up it may be in the "Wrong" order for somone who may be taking it out.Cucumber wrote:
So my question is this, does it really make any difference at what point between prep completion and leaving the office that you tell your manager that you can't complete. Thanks.
You might get some BS with the DOM counting empty slots to see how much mail "He Thinks" you should be delivering. At this time he normaly starts spouting off about weight off mail, how long it should have taken you to prep it, and how you should have enough time to deliver it all.
Do you have a problem with getting paid for the Overtime, or do you have to Finish on time? If you're happy with a bit of Overtime, but don't want to be out until Stupid O'clock, just explain that to him.

The point at which you approach the manager is when all mail, redirections, parcels have been thrown up and you are about to bag up.
If you do not agree on the process suggested to enable you to finish on time then you still do what the manager says, however you have the option to get clarified with them about what time to phone in and tell them whether you will complete the delivery or not. Locally it is usually 12.30pm, and if you cannot complete by the finish time you can then insist to the manager to bring back the remainder of delivery that will not be completed. If they are no longer in work when you phone (ha ha) then you still return with the bring back as you have made every attempt to contact ( and use your own ohone too s that you hve a reference time on the call). Otherwise they could force you to deliver everything, everyday, which is contracted slavery and completely unacceptable.

I hear what you're saying Redneck but I'm sure you, like me, have been conned on this before? I'd much rather leave it in the frame for someone else to take out (hopefully the Bloody DOM). Once you've walked out that door with all the mail the pressure's on you to Deliver it. Maybe not in reality (because you say you're happy to bring it back) but mentally you're geared up for a 6 hour delivery instead of a 5 hour delivery.redneck wrote:The point at which you approach the manager is when all mail, redirections, parcels have been thrown up and you are about to bag up.

You know damn well when you phone the DO at 12.30 the DOM will not be there, and the mental pressue cranks up.

What I do is I say “I can either:
A). Take what I think is the right amount, play it safe but I might be early back, in which case I’ll ask you what work needs doing; or
B) Take what you tell me to take and I’ll give you a call an hour before finish to let you know if I need to bring some back
Which do you want me to do”
They always pick option A, cos at 2pm they are looking at getting home themselves and have already reported it as clear (in hope)

I tend to tell them more than once to be sure. Depening on the duty I'm on, who with, what volumes are there on that day ect I have a good idea if I'm gonna be late. I tell the day before that I won't be completing in some cases depending on who I'm with and what duty I'm on. I'll tell them first thing too, then finally just as I've done prepping as per the advice.

Meh... Beyond fed up with getting different orders and earraches from several manager.
One tells me go do this, I say theres too much, he says just take it and see how you get on.
I arrive back having brought back letters and get it in the neck from the senior after just following orders for the other manager.. Who then claims he never said that. Can't win.

First off DONT TRUST THE f***ers, take a witness or better still, your rep in with you when you tell them you won't be going over. Patently the screws are trying it on to knock the confidence in the overrunning delivery procedure out of you. No rep? Ring the area rep!
