Subsidised Chinese postage

About time we put a stop to this massively subsidised postal service from China. Apparently we signed up to the scheme because China is a "Developing Country" but the amount of goods flooding in from there is massive nowadays costing them next to nothing to send it here. We've all seen the stuff on Ebay.....usually cheap tat for pence including delivery. Had one this week with goods (a few kids beads)which cost him a few pence including delivery and the customer even had to come to the office to sign for it!!! Its not only putting UK manufacturing/retail businesses out of the equation but costing us money and time instead of making RM a profit. With the amount of goods exported by China I am sure that they dont need propping up by our own struggling firm.

Is it actually RM that are absorbing the cost of this subsidised rate?

Or do we get compensated in some way for it?

There are other posts on this forum about this issue. I believe its largely due to EU regulations which deem China to still be a developing country when in actual fact it is one of the richest countries in world. They are also exempt from VAT and the parcels are weighed collectively enabling single items to maybe only incur half a penny in postage costs.

No we don't get compensated. I would imagine this subsidy effects certainly every postal service in the EU and maybe most postal services across the globe.

I'm always intrigued as to RM attitude towards chinese packets as large amounts (in my opinion) seem to fake 'designer' goods.

The worse part is a certain number are treated as SD items. WHY ? Esp this time of year when your pushed with SD's anyway .

Nothing to do with the EU but you are right it affects every country in the UPU. Only 4 countries are not members - Andorra, Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau.

About terminal dues and transit charges
Since 1969, the designated operator that sends a letter-post item to another country remunerates the destination Post for processing and delivering that item. This system of remuneration is known as terminal dues.

Important source of revenue
Terminal dues are an important source of revenue for UPU member countries. The system continues to evolve from one Universal Postal Congress to another. At the 2004 Bucharest Congress, member countries adopted a system aimed at covering their actual mail processing costs. Moreover, a link was established between the remuneration received and the quality of service provided.

Target system
Not all countries are at the same stage of development and there are significant variations in their mail volumes, postal tariffs and cost absorption. The aim is thus to progressively incorporate the developing and least developed countries into a target system that already applies to industrialized countries.

Transit charges
Transit services provided to the designated operator of the country of origin have always been paid for. For letter-post items, the remuneration which covers the cost of land or sea conveyance of mails is called "transit charges".

Now, whether its enough or not is a different discussion.

Possibly as long as they get delivered the next day instead of by a particular time the system doesn't see it as a fail

Trump is an idiot and I dislike him but he is correct in saying China as a whole is a rich country and it's businesses can afford to pay reasonable postal charges to send it's products around the world. China is run effectively like a dictatorship and there are a lot of people living in poverty and other stuff such as the government stealing poor peoples land etc . Maybe the authorities taking the view that China Post should receive postal subsidies see the way the populace are treated and work on that basis.

Yes and Britain still gives China foreign air of over £300 million per year for education in remote regions. And who buys the British government bonds, the Chinese. So we borrow money from them with interest, and we give it back to them. You couldn't make it up. It's the same as india, who has nuclear weapons and a space programme, yet we give them money. In fact we give most of the world money, all the time when OUR people are being told their encounters for being unemployed or sick. Revolution is coming.
