Start time/cutting off

Just at the end of my first week - proper graft ain’t it? ;)

I’m on a 25 hour reserve contract - spoke to the main DO manager today and he wants me in at 9am, this is fine.

Just 2 questions really -

1) what should I do when I’m moved to a new duty? Will the full time postie do the prep? I’m not starting early, actually been told that I won’t be paid for it.

2) how do you go about cutting off if you’re not the driver/experienced postie? Everything has been ok so far but feels like I’m at the mercy of the van driver really.

If you are on a 25 hour contract what are your hours? 9am-2pm everyday? If you have been asked to come in early then they must pay you for it, no pay, no work. Does you 2pm finish time match to full timers finish time?

Yea, those are my hours - originally he asked another manager and he said 9.30 to 2.30, which was abit crazy I thought (I’d probably be the only one in the office rocking up at 9.30!)

What the finish times of everybody else in the office? Do you have longs and shorts?

No idea too be honest mate - it seems once people have done their duties they go home. Latest I’ve been out is 3:30pm (yesterday - which I claimed OT for today)

In our office, everyone has the same finish times. Mon 1410, Tues 1340, Weds Thurs Fri 1435, Sat 1405. So someone on 25 hrs would start at 0910, 0840, 0935 & 0905 respectively. If you start before your time, you will get paid for it but it’s up to you to claim it each morning.

find out your partners finish time, whatever it is, take 5 hours off that for your start time. Your scheduled finish time must match your partner s.

1) yes for the most part, but i wouldnt guarantee walking in to a complete frame everyday
2) you just tell your partner you want to return for your finish time, he cant hold you hostage by keeping you out there past it.They should bring you back for at least 10 mins before your scheduled finish so you can return your 739s, put pouches away and be walking out the door at your finish time.

That's if you are *asked* to start early. You can't just turn up early and expect to get paid for it.

If you are asked to start 30 mins early and you finish ten minutes late, then you claim 40 mins.

No problem with that. I'm literally the only person who starts on time in my office, 9:30. I do my 6 hours and go home. Well, I usually claim overtime, but the point is, I start at 9:30 and I don't care that other 9:30 starters have already left the office, not my problem.

Of course. Ddarko said he’d been asked to start at 0900. If this is before his start time, he should claim for it.

Hi remember in your 5hr day that includes a half hour paid meal break. I suggest you speak to your manager and ask what time your meal break is, if you were to work the 5 hours from 9am to 2pm without a break you are owed half an hour overtime, therefore you would be paid till 2.30. You need to be aware of the mealbreak entitlements because most managers won't tell you about them.

And neither, in my experience, will other posties, including the work place coach I had. I was about three months in before a postie I worked with clued me in.

I still rue all those unclaimed half hours ..

Another query - as I’m on a 25 hours contract Monday to Saturday. Do I not count the Saturday because our Place does 5 weeks on 1 week off. I’m assuming those worked Saturdays count towards my days off.

Obviously 5 hours a day would take me up to 30 - not 25.

I’ll ask my manager about meal time, how do I claim this if let’s say it’s at the end of the day. Do I tell him the day after?

About meal times lads and lassies, I’m also on a 25 hr contract and have been told as I only work 5 hours I am not due any break paid or other, help in this would be appreciated ta
