Does this save Royal Mail money?.

In theory, probably.
The scans can be traced near enough to the doorstep so confirms that we were there with the item, suggesting that in all likelihood we did correctly deliver it.

With this evidence, one could assume that a number of denial of receipt complaints can be successfully rebutted, resulting in compensation not being paid out.

The new (well newly being used in my office) tracking enquiry system. Is very good, recognises the 2D barcode numbers, and will state the location of the delivery scan and postie who made the scan. The more info that RM has to conform that the job has been done the better.

Depending on how strict your office runs, the only downside to them is the opposite getting pulled up for not doing them

Yep, saves lots of money as they are cutting amount of workers in fraud prevention.

The main thing it is used for is gaining and retaining contracts.

If we can show 99% scan rate on the doorstep (better than Hermes and ups etc) then more companies will want to send their parcels with us.

In theory it could save time when booking any docket left items at the DOs as the delivery address forms part of the data encoded in the 2D barcode

Some postmen in my office take great delight in telling everyone they hardly ever bother scanning them.

The problem there is too many posties just assume their job is safe. If we had a major competitor come in and actually take work off us then cuts would be made.
Who would you be making redundant as a manager? The consistently worst performing would be first to go as they are the reason we're losing major contracts.

Because they're a series of shapes rather than one long flat line like the original ones we had (still have) on most things. They contain much more information. There's 3d barcodes too (not at Royal Mail), they contain different colours aswell as shapes.

lol why are people constantly doing dumb s**t like this that in the end cuts the job up for everyone ? RM are going to make everyone work their time or as close as they can get it everyday anyway. So all these runners are just creating bigger and bigger duties for themselves once all the PDA actuals are used to devise deliveries.

A lot of the time I try to scan them again and again and they just won't scan. It is annoying.

I give them 3 attempts, if it don't work by the 3rd it gets posted/delivered.

Because they are two dimensional. Traditional UPC barcodes are one dimensional - the thickness of the bars along the axis of the barcode can be thought of like Morse code. They look two dimensional, but the height of the bars is just to make it scannable.
