A poll: reducing the salary of cwu officals
Do you agree that we should: reduce the salary to a reasonable level.
I would suggest that if we reduce the salary to a reasonable level, then the officals would be more prone to reflecting the needs of its members.
Further more i do not pay subs to any organization in order to finance a 'lifestyle'.

This is what unions used to do.
Nowadays they seem to spend their time trying to get new recruits, helping disadvantaged groups etc, commenting on political matters none of which is wrong but their core raison d'être is to support, promote and defend their members. The unions of today seem to be missing that point.

I suppose we all have different views of what a union should be. I believe a union, in combination with other unions, should be a weapon to smash capitalism and help win control of the means of production and run it on behalf of the workers and those who use the service. I don't believe a union should be oiling the wheels of capitalism so as it can steamroller its way over the working class. These union bosses should be on the same as an average workers wage, and in the case of the CWU should be working on Saturdays. If it's good enough for those of us who fund them, it's good enough for them. Otherwise there is no incentive for them to fight on our behalf, which is why we find ourselves in the present position.

Go steady there IWW - the thought police may have you in the European Courts before you can say Karl Marx - for who knows what the aims of the CWU are.IWW Fellow Worker wrote:I suppose we all have different views of what a union should be. Karl Marx. A middle-class German bloke who used to hang about the British Library all day writing books hardly any member of the working class ever read, and funded by his factory owning mate Engels. I believe Lord Billy of Copperas Hill is a fan of Karl.dvbuk55 wrote:Go steady there IWW - the thought police may have you in the European Courts before you can say Karl Marx - for who knows what the aims of the CWU are.![]()

I suppose you get what you pay for ie SH*T.DirtyHarry wrote:Yes, their salaries should be more or less the same as the members they represent. Capitalist pipsqueeks are always very keen to point out how
much more than their members, union bosses earn, especially when fat cat management are criticised.
Time we hammered that particular nail on the head.

We would have to ensure a means of instant recall if we thought they were going to sell us out. We don't have this at the moment. I have no doubt there are many socialists about who would represent the membership without being handed the sort of money Billy Hayes gets.k979aaa wrote:The thing is i think they have been bought the poorer the pay the easier to pay them off if they have no morel's.dvbuk55 wrote:Pay me that sort of money and I'd fill a skip.k979aaa wrote:I suppose you get what you pay for ie SH*T.DirtyHarry wrote:Yes, their salaries should be more or less the same as the members they represent. as i said in a previous thread. let,s move cwu hq to the midlands ( i suggest coventry ) the cost of living is a bit cheaper than the south, then we can see who is really keen on representing us and who is in it for the " lifestyle" london offers. remember, that previous incumbent, alan johnson, where could he be now? perhaps someone else has his eyes on a political position given the support he shows to a party that certainly does not represent us, ( that,s something cwu hq and labour have in common) has mr hayes painted his own vision for the future? has anyone out there got a clue as to how he thinks? the only time i read anything he has to say is in the other end of the propaganda scale "the voice" as opposed to the "courier" when he gets on a moral high horse about affairs outside the cwu. i once wrote to him on this subject and he basically questioned my appropriateness ( as a mere opg i presume ) to dare to suggest he sticks to the role i pay him to do, within cwu time and resources. i, like any other member of this union are free to dedicate their time and efforts on any campaign they wish, i don,t use cwu funds for it so nobody on the pec ect should either.

Bread & Butter stuff -Back to Basics
I can remember having problems with a once Nationalised Industry that USED to provide a service and represented by one big union + two other grade unions and a chat in Citizen's Advice Bureau . Off the record he told me he was ex Clydesdale , where they made most people look pink , but he said the days when Unions represented their members on the shopfloor went in the 70's . It's all politicsTrueBlueTerrier wrote:This is what unions used to do.

Don't get me wrong I've nothing but respect and sympathy for unit & area , General Biscuit Barrel's foot soldiers , many have been threatened by managers who at worst should never been promoted or at best would have been OK 20-30 years ago . Then there's the constant pressure from above with RM and some of the most militant only with a different twist are the unofficial Manager's Union or the wannabe CMA Reps . I'm not surprised there's a high turnover .
