No you think you do, let the managers manage, that's why they get paid more money than you, do your job & go home.

Royal Mail's hierarchy is largely based on the Dilbert Principle whereby the most ineffective workers are systematically moved to a place where they can do the least amount of damage i.e. management. A lot of posties became managers because they hated lugging a bag on their back and instead opted for a life in a comfy office indoors putting things up on notice boards, surfing porn on the internet and taking long leisurely lunch breaks. Now and again they have meetings and when an Area Manager arrives, they do things they don't normally do, like work.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Probably a good few above line manager level have never worked their way up the ranks. If they were to all have to work their way up the ranks, at least they'd have an understanding on how offices work

I've worked with a lot of managers in my time probably over a hundred and the vast majority of them have "worked their way up" whatever that means.
They are the managers who have taken us to where we are, they are the managers responsible for the bullying culture we have in the business, they are the managers responsible for the insanely huge waste of money and resources throughout the business that happens on a daily basis, they are the managers that have failed to modernise while constantly blaming us, they are the managers responsible for the disconnect between staff and senior management.
Knowing how to post a letter doesn't make you a good manager. You could learn all there is to know about delivery in a week.

You have to remember a lot of these new managers have studied @ university, my gaffa got a degree? They have been on all these team management & leadership courses & now have to deal with a load of posties that mostly only got the job because a relative worked for RM, I feel for them.

A lot of the trouble with some managers and linos in RM is that they have no man management skills whatsoever, and just have no idea how to motivate their staff or to get the best out of them.A happy workforce is a productive, loyal workforce.

I'm uncomfortable with the stick many linos get to be honest, many are crap for sure, but that's because the money is pretty average and pressure is high so the decent ones either end up leaving all together or jack it to become a postman again. There's about 3 or 4 ex managers in our office who are just walkman again, some of the stories they tell would make people think differently I think. They're all good people too.

One of the best line managers I ever worked with was from outside RM - because he actually learned how to manage people. He had no experience of delivery so didn't assume he knew it all. Meanwhile, the ones that rose up from lowly OPG status, if I can generalise, think that everyone is as desperate to do as little work as them. It's some kind of psychological complex.postslippete wrote:Royal Mail's hierarchy is largely based on the Dilbert Principle whereby the most ineffective workers are systematically moved to a place where they can do the least amount of damage i.e. management. Having a university degree in a lot of cases only means that the person who has achieved it has good memory it doesn't mean that they are anymore intelligent than you or I. Besides they may have a degree in Greek philosophy or something of that nature, that is really helpful for a DO manager. Not.mattycash wrote:You have to remember a lot of these new managers have studied @ university, my gaffa got a degree? Wtf? Just coz they've got a degree, probably in nothing relevant to what we do, doesn't mean they'll be any good at being a RM manager. How can you have any respect for someone trying to tell you how to do your job when they've no first hand experience at doing it? Managers should do their first month of work as a regular postie. From scratch. Like they expect new starters to do. With minimal training. Being put on a different walk every week and being 'asked' to work their day off in their first week. That would give them a fantastic insight into the job, and maybe, just maybe, they would be better able to channel their leadership skills in a more productive manner for the good of the company, not their back pocket via bonuses. Just a thought. But then what do I know ? I'm 'just' a postie.mattycash wrote:You have to remember a lot of these new managers have studied @ university, my gaffa got a degree? I quite agree. Too many Graduates these days seem to desire professions and careers purely for the wrong reasons i.e. money. Also, it doesn't matter how many management and leadership courses you go on because good managers are often born rather than made.
