Advice for a new rep

Can anybody give any advice or sources of infomation for a new delivery rep? because there is a good chance of sinking before i can swim.

Never, ever have a meeting with any screw or DUM unless you have a third party present. You can't trust them. They lie better than an Axminster rug.

You probably will make mistakes to start with, but stick at it & gain knowledge & confidence. You've got this site to ask peoples advice on issues. The more battles you win, the more members will be won over, although some are ungrateful no matter what you do.

Anything you feel contentious ask them for it in writing.

register on the cwu site to get all the info.

grow a very thick skin very quickly.

there's a 'union skills 1' course starting on Monday at Alvescott Lodge, get your branch to phone and see
if there are any cancellations. (there will be) and get yourself down there.

Then buy me a drink at the bar on Monday night!

Don't march people up hills and then march them down again.

Get all the agreements like 'the Way Forward' etc.

Be better than them. (easy one that)

Always set yourself a position that you will not go beyond.

well done mate congrats for stepping up

dont agree anything with a dom without consulting your area rep or your committee

learn to say NO a lot

and dont be afraid when you have talks with DOMs to take it away for consideration dont make decisions there and then cause thats a management trick to try catch u out

BUT dont be afraid to ask for advice from older union members ex reps etc ,area reps ,branch secs and of course on ere

Most of it .. has already been said .. & well. Just one thing .. probably too obvious .. to mention. Always 'Remember the Member'. The pyramid of power has long been abused & should be inverted. The members .. are at the top .. the leaders .. at the bottom!

As a new rep things will be difficult, your first source for help and advice should be your area delivery rep, if you speak to him he should be able advice you until you feel capable and confident. hoping to be a rep soon myself, Goodluck mate

If in doubt hound you area reps,it's what they are there for. Oh yeah and be prepared to be dragged down the bullying and harassment procedure with monotonous regularity

If you are not sure about something always ask a experienced rep or another postie because some posties are geared up on industrial relations, harassment and bullying and so on. Never, say yes to anything, always write things down when you are in a meeting with management or members (e.g. who said what and when - this is important so you have some form of evidence you can relate back to) and always be loyal to the members.
