Retirment at 60

Shouldn't Royal Mail move towards setting a standard retirement age of 60.

Half of our office is full of old folks constantly moaning about having to work so much, they are completely resistant to any sort of change, but they refuse to retire.

We've literally had two "falls" in the office in the last month or so and they've been signed off from driving.

The shorter working week has set them all off moaning constantly, because they're old and already can't handle the workload.

Meanwhile, the other half of us are stuck on crappy part-time reserve contracts, desperate for full time contracts.

Everyone at the coal face knows working past 60 on delivery is a bad idea.
In the old days you could go on nights or move to a Mail Centre but those options have been removed.
So retiring at 60 makes sense but who is going to pay for it?
Instead they moved the NRA to 67.

The union would have been better off putting all it's resources into fighting for something like this, rather than a stupid 38 hr week or even worse, the pie in the sky will never happen 35 hr week.

I'm sure the union could broker some deal between Royal Mail and the Government to put some money aside.

Even if they did retire them I'm pretty sure the managers would still have you on part time contracts.

I can’t believe some of the posts on here. Should we have everybody shot once they turn 60. Some of us older posties would put some of you younger ones to shame. Absolutely dreadful thing to say

It's not a bad idea.
It would save the NHS and the exchequer billions.
We could see an end to youth unemployment.
If we could only find a way to make human flesh palatable it would go a long way to solving world famine as well.

Up until 2008 the normal retirement age in RM was 60, but you could still carry on until 65 with the permission of the company. Where I worked it was known as retention – not sure if that was a company wide term?

When the CARE/CSDB pension was introduced all pension accrued after 2010 had an NRA of 65(everything before is still 60).

In 2011 the government abolished the requirement to retire at 65 – we can now work as long as we want!

The state pension age is increasing, so anyone in their mid forties or younger won't get theirs until at least age 68.

Everything is going up, so the likelihood of RM deciding to lower it again is pie in the sky stuff I'm afraid.

Ultimately it's up to the individual to make sure they can retire when they want to!

Yes. It's not a pension at all. The DBCBS is a pot of money designed to fund your tax free lump sum when you take your already accrued NRA60 & NRA65.

We got two types of old posties at ours;

Ones that are just old - love these guys, bound to be a bit slower but nothing wrong with that, not at all.

Ones that are old and moan everyday about things that basically boil down to “I dont like delivering mail”. Not so keen on these.

You can retire at 60?

Can take your pension at 55 (I believe) if you really want to.

55 is the way to go, plan ahead, more to life than worrying about how much money you might lose out on, then dying a year after receiving it all.

I’m convinced the modern day postie life is incompatible with someone in their 60s, definitely so where that person has been doing it all their working life.

I knew somebody would take it personally.

But seriously, do you really want to be doing a physical job full-time well into your 60s? Working yourself into an early hip replacement or heart attack.

The biggest problem is that Royal Mail doesn't facilitate any method for older people to step down the workload as they get older, if they could drop down to a couple days a week it would be a godsend for our office. But they won't give up their cushy contracts and accept any of the shite ones RM currently offer. I don't blame them, who would want to accept a 20 hour contract over 5 days.

And you say this as if I'm only shitting on old people, I'm not, I'm watching our office become more and more angry. Younger folk can't get on the housing ladder even though with overtime we end up working full-time, no lender will lend you 100k when you can only show them a 20 hour contract. The older folks are becoming more and more worn down, I've witnessed a major decline in some of them, as a result they spend most of the time moaning, yet they don't want to retire because they clearly don't have a clue what they'd do with themselves, or aren't quite ready to give work up completely. Yet they are all financially secure enough that they don't need the amount of money they get from a FT round.

Maybe their moaning because when they joined the job was totally different and at least their was a half decent pension. Now the jobs f****d and the pension is crap and the new one ( if it ever comes in) won't be much better. And do you honestly think RM are going to make you up to full time. No chance. Why would they when they are getting all the work done on docket. He'll they even get your to deliver letters for free these days, it's called lapsing. I know people will say it's to fill the hours but deep down, you'd know your ding shafted. And I think it's crap. But RM don't want fulltime anymore. Most companies don't and that's why most workers have to rely on stage support while in work which is a tragedy.
