Hi guys.

Long story short -

Been here 13 years. I was 30 hours a week. Agreed to take on 2 thirds of another job for a 36 hour a week 1 in 4 contract. In the end it turned out it didnt work, so the put us back to 1 in 6 36 hours a week as long as we fully prep the other job that we were taking out.

Happy days.

I get a call off one of the boys on monday (its mine and my partners week off Hereford/Annual Leave) and they tell me the manager (NEW MANAGER) is trialing putting our job back to before ( the extra 2 thirds) but also WITHOUT the 1 in 4?

Now obviously ive kicked off as

a) the job didnt work before with the 1 in 4
b) why wait until me and my partner were off to trial it without saying a word to us?

So ive been up for a meeting with him yesterday and his attitude was basically just have a go and see hw much you can take within your time.

Now I know a part of this is my own fault as ive never taken my break or used a trolley etc but ive always managed to finish an hour or so early every day.

But obviously I tell my boss this that as soon as he takes away my only thing that makes me rush round not take a break or trolley etc is the fact i can make some time, so if he takes that away i'll just be more laid back do the job to a T and theres a chance tht on busy days i'd even end up cutting off my original job let alone taking another 3rd each of another job.

All this is bedside the fact when I got back last Saturday I was 25 mins early before my time, but there was 14 vans in the yard before me lol.

What wold you do/say in my position?

Thanks

and that my friend is the problem a lot of posties are not grasping!!! rushing about, not using the tools for the job, the union harped on about it, we didn't listen, now bosses see you finishing an hour early, they automatically think," I can put an hour on that duty" they don't see the way you are working!!! cutting corners, looking at letters on the hoof so to speak, running up stairs, etc, etc, when they mooted the use of trolleys in my office," I said, you better take a hour off each duty then"!!! they couldn't understand why, I knew!!! no one uses a trolley in my old office, they couldn't do the job properly and finish on time, that's what the union saw years ago, unfortunately, us posties didn't listen!!!!

Take your break, don't rush around or do anything that will be putting health in danger and cut off if you don't want to work over. It's simple.

Get onto the rep or area rep and get this nipped in the bud.

I know ive brought it all on myself, but it was my old boss who put us back on hour 30 hour jobs as long as we just prep the other job. The other job takes about 10 mins to prep each between us. So its like nothing. Weve been like this for 2 years and all through this quiet summer. But now all of a sudden the winter months are coming and they want to put an extra 3rd each on us. Also its more than an hour, as we will also have to pull the job out load it, travel there etc it all adds up..

I'm just wondering if the way hes going about it and stuff is ok? Like to me its obvious that no job has the scope for the boss to just say lets put an extra 90 mins work on there.and almost EVERYBODY makes time on tuesdays and saturdays (at lest in my office)

Like is it worth me and my partner arguing with him about it, or do we just change our whole routine and now start doing the job to the T (yes I know like it should) and cut off?

Thanks for the comments guys.

the first thing to realise is that what anyone else is doing whether thats finishing before you or not, is completely irrelevant. The fact is YOUR duty has been demonstrated to be an hour short in work per day, so the manager has the right to say "ok, they can do extra to fill up the time" He may go on in future to address other duties where people are finishing early and yours is the first.

"Like to me its obvious that no job has the scope for the boss to just say lets put an extra 90 mins work on there" if you kept finishing 90 mins early every day, then there would be.

You can argue it, but I dont think you have a leg to stand on, do the job to a T is an option but one you will now have to be very careful about as youve been doing it the other way for so long, the reason I say you have to be very careful is because of course theres nothing stopping you doing this but its also going to piss off the manager as he knows what youre up to and may be on your back more than he would have about anything you may do wrong from then on. But yeah this is your only real option now, and have to face the facts that your days of making time are pretty much numbered.

I saw the topic title and immediately thought the answer here will be “cut off”.

I opened the topic, read your post OP, and thought wow people are going to love this example, this is what people are always warning about!

Long answer, I feel a little for you, I reckon truth is, most people still try to make time if they have a reasonable chance of doing so, but those people are not really represented on here as I doubt they would even dream of logging into a forum after being so desperate to get done and go home..

But people are right to warn about this rushing business, here is the reason, clear as day.

What I would do is just tell the manager straight what has happened, not in an argumentative way, just in a “you must know what I’m talking about here” way, and tell him you’ll do what you can, don’t go purposely slow but just accept you’re working your time and as we near Christmas that extra work will just sort of, naturally peter out of your life, I’m sure.

After Christmas you might be accustomed to your new, safer pace, and may even decide to try a LWT later down the line. Once you get used to them, they are far better, and to be honest I’m a big advocate of them not even taking that much longer, once your body gets used to dancing with it.

Cheers lads. Yea i think thats what its boiling down to mainly is that the days of making time is over. I'll just do what I can in my time and take my time and chill out instead of going faster for my own benefit. At least doing the job to a T there will be less chance of mistakes and I can actually chat to the customers lol.

The runners and early starters who work for free , not taking your proper break , not using the correct equipment etc have completely screwed this job up for everyone.

People were not saying that when we were using our cars. Everyone was happy enough to run round and get done early then.

Mate truth be told making time is still a thing, but it has to be treated as a one off thing, you get now and again, any pattern starts forming and people start sniffing.
Managers you don’t see, who are looking at the data, couldn’t give a toss if it’s down to individual posting talent.

The point is we don't use our cars anymore and we were never meant to , just come back an hour early every day and see what happens ( PDA actuals) !

You're wrong. The Union and a lot of us posties were telling car users they were wrecking the job. Unfortunately they couldn't see beyond that days early finish and didn't listen.
