If an IPS frame is basically the same as a normal letter frame in a MC then it's 1 per frame

We have 6 IPS frames, for an hour or so each morning we might be doing well and have 2 people on them.
Shockingly it all goes to s**t and everyone is called round and then we squeeze about 18 on them.
That clears the work pretty damn quick, not often sorted to the right walk but sorted. speed not accuracy that's what royal mail want!

Sounds about right. We asked our line manager if he would rather have the job done properly with no mistakes or quickly with mistakes. He said quickly!

You can have it done well, done quickly or done cheaply. Pick any two

How many to an IPS frame

OK so I'm a newbie.
Nobody can explain the IPS frame to me. I just have to pop over and check a number of shelves for my route (there are around 5 shelved spaced out along the frame for my route which is a bit odd).
Can anyone tell me what IPS is? Where do these letters etc come from?

IPS Inward Primary Sorting except it is not it is in the old days Section Sorting but the managers did not like using the term SS made them sound like the NAZI'S which they are! Every section which is a postcode has a section sorting (IPS) frame could be 1 or 2 or 7 or more frames this is why you need to be trained by a person who can do the job.

I am amazed anyone in my DO can use the OPS frame then as there is no training in that place at all.

The letters are what cannot be run through the CSS machine it takes a great deal of skill to sort theses letters but there are boards for beginners above the frames but your neck will ache before you throw 30 letters in never mind 20 per minuet or so that is how it works.

Are you not part time if so most if not all will be done before you arrive but some miss sorts will come off the CSS but most of the old folk will do that if you have any left that is!

Yeah I am part time but I see folk doing some sorting at the IPS frame and I am told I keep having to check it for mail and I wondered where the hell all the extra mail comes from.
What is the "CSS machine"? Where is it? In a bigger sorting office? We certainly don't have any machines here - all sorting is done manually. Big white trays hold a myriad of parcels and packets and the ft staff stand and chuck the parcels into big trolleys for each town/route.
I think it's generally rubbish that new starts don't get taken round the delivery office and have some of the procedures described so you have some sort of idea of the scope of the operation at ground level. But no. You just get put on a route and basically left to fester.

If you are part time then your duty is probably meant to be prepped for you. Do you get paid overtime for going in early and prepping your duty?

The thing is lots of this is done before you arrive and get paid and is not relevant to your job the CSS machines are in hub offices and the mail is transported in trays or boxes or perstop trays as they are known to be called by the business or coffee trays to the front line staff? wonder why my mail smells of coffee!
