Trackers in vans

Many offices are get blitzed by fitting trackers to every van, what exactly are they tracking is it speed, seatbelt, or just basically killing time. lad in my office reckons his keeps bleeping but he don't know why.

Don't accelerate fast or brake sharp or leave the engine iddlying for long periods of time . You have to drive like miss daisy

We've had them for about 4 yrs now. They monitor driving style, beeping and logging sharp acceleration and braking and can also tell how long the van is running without moving, i.e iddling. If they're owt like ours they'll beep randomly and in some of ours you can't even set off normally without setting it off let alone with the acceleration needed to pull out into a main road. You'll soon get used to ignoring the beeping.

I do believe that whilst they can track your speed etc , they are unable to use against you for conduct purposes. Just as well as some people drive their van like it's stolen.

Does it monitor seat belts? most R M drivers can't be assed putting the belts on when delivering packets from one street to another.

The old type trackers where called "Trimble's" I once had to leave the van outside the locked gates on a Saturday, the van was moved on the Sunday into the parking area, it was flagged up at HQ ?

There are newer trackers that monitor your speed, a DOM left a print out on his desk, reg number time and date, speed van was doing and posted speed limit for the road. Some of the drivers have had a talking to about it.

They only monitor harsh braking, acceleration, turning, and speeding.

So basically ALL the time the vans are being used then based on the driver's I go out with.

When it's cold in the winter are we allowed to keep it idling during our breaks to keep the heater going?

Not sure on whether they can tell if the seatbelt is being used or not. I wouldn't be surprised if they were able to.
They have the GPS from the Trimble and/or the PDA so they can tell if a van is 'off-route'.
We had a couple of calls recently on monitoring. One to say a van had travelled twelve miles but the engine hadn't been switched off once. If you follow the rules then the van had to be switched off and locked up at each delivery point!?!?
The other call we had was about a van being driven out of hours or on a Sunday.

Trimble doesn't know if a seatbelt was being worn at the time of an accident but the mechanic does.

A royal mail mechanic doesn't know how to change a clutch properly never mind a seatbelt been worn or not

Apparently not. A bloke in our office got a telling off about exactly that!
