This past week we have had several days when loads of flats that should arrive in trays have been dumped into the sleeved Yorks containing parcels and packets. Anyone else getting this happen ???

Best guess is that it's the knock-on affect of Network 18 where the work arrives at your local MC late so just gets sorted into the sleeves just to get it out of the door

But they shouldn't be putting flats into sleeves it means we have to adopt a strange position to lift any that are heavy enough to flatten the springs.

Its a health and safety matter and if they are being told to do this then I will ask my manager to refuse the shrouds back to the mail centre.

Getting it out of the door is fine for MCs, but it puts undue and unequal pressure on DOs. Hence why I think Mcs and DO workers/managers should spend time on each other functions.

I fully agree. All we hear from the Mail Centres is "get it out the door", never mind the presentation or amount.

That's it in a nutshell "get it out the door, the vans ready to go " doesn't matter how it's dressed up.

In our office we have 7 postcodes. Every week our households come completely mixed up, no segregation whatsoever. The time it takes to sort out them into codes is ridiculous and on more than one occasion we have been given a whole duty's households on a Friday because they have been elsewhere in the building. Another case of 'Just get it out of the door!' I wouldn't be surprised if the bundling centre is collapsing the hours it is saving by not separating them like they used to.

Our arrivals from Tyneside Mc are shocking.
We have 6 postcode sections.
Mixed pkt shrouds
Mixed dsa trays
Tracked mixed with everything else
Missorts galore
As for d2ds ours are never segregated and never have been.

From Bristol MC we are now getting about only 30% sequenced mail and 0% sequenced on a Tuesday, was this part of our deal to start later a few years back???????????

If it were sent back by the DO chances are that it would either be refused by the driver or sent straight back to the DO. We're generally so short of staff now, it must be getting near the point now where on many shifts half the staff are casuals.

It's going to happen more often as a result of Network 18, the processing time is compressed and so there's a lot more to go out on the later lorries so the work gets condensed down a lot more. The alternative realistically is that we push all the dispatches to the DOs back by at least an hour and then DO start times would likely be pushed back by the same amount of time (RM aren't going to have staff in DOs before the work comes in apart from those that deal with the work coming off the lorries)

Quite frankly tough - it shouldn't be sent out that like and where are we going to get extra staff - you have a pool of casuals to call on we don't.
Hence my suggestion of workers and managers swapping functions - it will open your eyes.

If managers are throwing out of the door like that I may understand but not agree with it. If OPG colleagues are doing it off their own back or endorsing it as acceptable then they should be ashamed of themselves.

If colleagues are struggling and passing it on to the DOs then IMHO all they are doing is proving that Network18 will work if you cut enough corners. Fail stuff, it will help your DO mates out, and it will highlight where the process is failing/

In MCs it's going to happen eventually that you'll have just a few permanent staff (probably just for the SD locker) and everyone else will be casuals.

The casuals won't care, if they don't thnm managers would probably never call them back and just get another casual to replace them who would

If we fail too many times all that will happen (and I reckon it'll happen sooner rather than later) is that RM will push dispatch times back by at least an hour, then they'll push back night shift finishing times and DO start times by the same amount. Network 18 won't be going away

I'm not going to get involved in an "Us & Them" argument but SPs comments do give us an insight into what's happening in the MCs. I for one can't believe what's happening on that side of the business. FFS if they (RM) are going to continue penny pinching at the MCs are they not aware of the knock on effect to the DOs? :hmmmm The problem we have at the "Sharp End" is whatever happens down the Pipeline once it arrives at the Do it's simply a case of "Well it's here now and you lot have got to deliver it... TODAY"! No matter that it may have been some dickhead manager at the MC that's "Forgotten" all these bloody Viking mags should have gone out a few days earlier! :arrrghhh

Our DOM has said the MC is not supposed to dump loads of flats into sleeved Yorks mixed in with parcels. Our DOM has contacted the MC to let them know this is happening but I don't know what kind of response we got. Not wishing to get into an 'us versus them' perspective but it has seemed for a long time that there is more of an obligation on DO staff to follow rules of work than for staff at MCs.

Someone else mentioned tracked parcels being mixed in with ordinary parcels in sleeved Yorks. This doesn't happen so much in our DO now but it has in the past. Apparently this is allowed and is not breaking any rules. It is to with use of the new machinery or something like that.

My own personal pet hate is letters mixed in with the flats in trays to be sorted on our IPS. At one time the letters and flats would be in separate trays but this has not been the case for ages if not years now. The worst case scenario of this is when there is a bulk mailing of some sort and you get one flat alternated with one thin letter continually. It may get worse then with the letter running upside down to the address on the flats. It would seem like this is done on purpose just to **** us off but that probably isn't the case. I think our DOM has also told us the MC are allowed to sort flats with letters trays and it is another machinery thing.

Letters in ours this morning as well as flats might as well just chuck the lot in a sleeved York? is this the one plan idea!

Probably the result of mail coming in later due to Network 18. Dispatch times from MCs to DOs haven't changed so there's the same volume of work but the time for processing it is compacted. RM are going to have to push all dispatch times from MCs to DOs back by at least half an hour at some point. Since Network 18 started there's a noticable increase in the amount of manual that we send to DOs that would have been sequenced. Before Network 18 came in, the mech would have been run through the inward sort plan (that sorts it to batches) earlier and so more would have gone through the CSS machines.

It's way worse for MC to MC traffic (and yorks of large Tracked having loads of small Tracked as well.. It'll probably increase in the run up to xmas pressure

That's down to the MCs that have T2K machines running whatever they can through them as there isn't the mail to justify running them otherwise
