"Commit to Deliver"

Post by mindstate1984 »

So we had our manager round the other day saying that from here on out if you take mail out of the office you are obliged to deliver it all regardless of whether that will take you past your finish time. You have to let them know before you go out and put the ball in their court but obviously it is not always that straight forward.

Basically, can they legally tell you to work past your scheduled finish time and what could the repercussions of bringing mail back even after being told to stay out?

They cannot make you work past your time. If they are forcing you to take out too much mail that you cannot deliver within your scheduled time bring it back , make sure you get your union rep involved and to witness your conversation with management. I used to bring back stuff all the time , I would tell the Dom that I wouldn't be able to complete my delivery with my union rep as a witness to the conversation. When I got back I would inform management of what I brought back. They can't do f..k all about it.

No.

To be fair to the manager the Overrunning Delivery procedure does indeed state
• Where an employee feels he/she may experience difficulty in completing his/her delivery within the remaining duty time, he/she should approach his/her manager during preparation of the walk. Once a delivery postperson leaves for delivery the clear expectation is that all mail must be delivered. The process for this is contained in Annex B.
However, it also states
b) When an individual has requested assistance on delivery, but the manager feels that assistance is not required, this decision along with the advice given to the employee will be recorded and associated with the daily traffic volume records. The employee can have access to this record and may ask to see it prior to commencement of his/her delivery. In addition to recording the employee’s request, the employee will be instructed to ring his/her local manager prior to a specified time or as soon as possible if full completion of delivery workload within the time allotted proves not to be possible.
So you make a best guess in agreement with the manager, and if you disagree with their assessment you state that and arrange to call them (or them to call you) at an agreed time as per b.

As long as ive worked for the RM its been that way, now the manager has access to the PDA data so they can look at the data and find out where you were and how long you was there they will use it against us if we lie about our whereabouts.

Then you have the record of the call on your phone history they have the record of you stopping to make the call and you go back to the office as agreed before you left. Best to tell them to call you as it puts the ball in their court and they can call as soon as an early finisher is back to be sent out to help lol.

I know they management will try to use pda info against people if they can, but I think I remember reading that it can't be used against staff in disciplinary cases, I could be wrong though.

Wee got told by our Union rep today sorry I mean royal mails Union rep. That wee cannot bring mail back and must leave it instead. So what is going on can wee not cut off anymore? Anyone got clarification on this? I see this as a form of entrapment as if you leave to much you will be be brought down on the conduct code?

Commit to deliver, hmm, what happens if your van breaks down or puncture etc, only take out what you feel comfortable to deliver if for whatever reason your guesstimate is not correct then inform your office using the Pda would be my course of action

Ah more words of wisdom from management It would be good if they could commit to deliver on the cultural change in the business in the last pay deal only six months ago. Yet now we have more baffling bullshit about stuff which no one can guarantee I will deliver all the mail if I died on delivery or a nuclear bomb goes off in Leeds city centre why do I find it so hard they commit to do anything I ask of them maybe because none of them can deliver!

What has this job become!?. I can’t believe how it’s become,we have little concept of how bad it’s become in our little unit, sure we have the usual gripe with lapsing loaning and Mail volume forecasts, start and finishing times and overtime lottery etc,but it’s put into context when I hear all this stuff,it simply can’t right or acceptable, yet it clearly goes on,to deflate and demoralise a workforce already under pressure and working in a rife culture of fear,

So why is it , that if you go over and claim OT, its ok, but if you have to bring mail back, its like the end of the world ?
I married my wife for her looks, but not the one she gave me when i said i was going to be a postman.

Because when you cut off you're making it a managers problem to sort out or worst case deliver. They will think you're doing it because you're dragging your heels and being awkward
