Xmas Oversize

Post by Postmanprat2018 »

Was thinking this xmas my run will take me roughly an hour a day over which I will probably do, but the new manager this year is expecting oversize as well to go out, I usually get about 3 yorks a day November December, so if im an hour a day by on my run can I refuse to touch 1 single oversize? and can they do anything about it, as I will be over with my run as it is?

No you can't refuse to touch oversize items or anything else for that matter if given a reasonable instruction to do so but you can refuse to work past your finish time.

Don't listen to ted bear! because its not a reasonable request if you are over 1 hour over ur time with mail which you said you are willing to work on. Yes just don't touch the oversize if you are going by your time with your mail good choice

I am sorry this is poor advice and anyone following it could be dismissed.

Work can make a reasonable request of you during your paid working hours.

Taking an oversize is a reasonable request as long as the H&S issues are addressed. 2 Man lift, space in the van etc.

You definitely should not
Yes just don't touch the oversize
without first approaching the manager for a solution. That can be construed as wilful delay of mail.

However, all overtime is voluntary and if you decide to only work 1 hours overtime each day, then follow the overrunning procedure and advise the manager there is too much work to do in the time available. Likely the oversize will take longer to deliver than other stuff, so make that point and let the manager decide, if they still want you to take it, then adjust your estimation to take it into account.

hows it a reasonable request when the guys an hour overhis time and doesn't want to go out with 3 yorks of oversize? stick to your guns, don't let them bully u into taking oversize if you are over your time ur over your time they cant sack u for being over ur time. If they said take out all the oversize instead of mail then ok, but no way should u be forced into taking oversize out on top of mail that will take u by ur time

No one is saying that anyone should do it all. IF they are told to take the oversize they should work as directed but they do NOT have to work a second passed their finishing time.

Boss I can't take these oversize I'm already going to be an hour over my time

You have to take them the packet duties have already left

Fine but I am unable to work any later than an hour passed my finish/any later than my finishing time.

The decision as to whether the oversize gets taken and some of the duty gets handed back or all the duty gets done and someone else does the oversize is now in the boss' lap

You think it's unreasonable to be asked to deliver oversize as a Postman and that's your opinion. However, just by saying refuse to deliver them as you can't be sacked for being over your time is dangerous if anyone followed that advice without first understanding the relevant agreement.

You are right that you can't be forced to work over your time, but there is a process agreed with the Union and that doesn't mean you can pick and chose what you deliver. The manager has to make that decision and even if they disagree with you, there are still processes in place that you should follow if it's going to take you over.
