Is anybody happy working as a postie on this board ?

Hi,

Will be starting a 25 hour contract in the next month and by the looks of this site i should run for the hills !!

Just want a job i can get on with do my round, do overtime if needed and go home/pick kids up from school.

Given the information you've posted the plus points are:
You'll get to work your 25 hours and pick up some overtime most days either finishing your round, or lapsing, or both.
Once you've done a few weeks you'll get used to how things work and your fitness will improve so you don't fall asleep exhausted every afternoon
Once you're out on your round you are your own boss
It it's not raining/too hot it can be quite pleasant out and about

The negatives are:
If you are in a poor/particularly understaffed office, you will come in to find all the F/T posties have already gone and no-one has prepped your mail so you will have at least 1 - 2 hours work to do before you start your delivery.
As a result of above you will be well over your time (great for overtime UNTIL it gets past the time you need to leave to pick the kids up).
When the above happens you enter a world of pain if your manager is the 'you must be crap to take so long (ignoring the 2 hours you spent doing the sorting someone else should have already done), i'm not paying you the O/T,/ you should be quicker...etc' type of guy.
You'll then spend every morning arguing about what you can/can't do in your hours or in the amount of O/T YOU are happy to do.

Hopefully more of the pluses than negatives and you'll enjoy the job! Good luck

Thanks for the reply. So the negatives again rely heavily on management. Im seeing a pattern occuring !

Good luck in your new job. Our office has a good manager which makes all the difference. Everyone in our office has a good working relationship with him (bar one) and this makes things much easier. Arthurpewty has pretty much summed up what to expect. Once again, good luck!

When you finish work for the day you just need to switch off and mentally block Royal Mail from your thinking, its an OK job ruined by BAD BAD MANAGEMENT starting at the top.

I think you form your own opinions about the company when you join. I really wouldnt want to put anyone off working for the Royal Mail but some of the things that go on are laughable. From what you have put its great that you will do overtime as Royal Mail rely heavily on that but bear in mind that some days you may not finish until gone 3pm or even 4pm. Will you still be taking out a few extra bags of mail on overtime and pick the kids up from school at the same time?

You mean you finish , have a nap and it's STILL afternoon. Your rounds too easy. Lol.
