Do we really need line managers?

Ours stands at the signing on sheets looking at wee bit of paper
trying to shaft the workforce for 2 hours lol then surf's his phone and then gets 32 grand the mind boggles

No not required, office runs better without them, maybe have a section team leader and spend the money on something more useful.

It's a simple enough job that requires very little intervention or supervision if there is a half decent structure in place. Line managers spend most of the time doing one thing or the other either interfering in that structure causing chaos and then expecting a pat on the back for "managing" that chaos or they invent work to save them working.

We have one who's an ex-Dom on £40k+ who simply walks around collecting trays while dragging the overtime sheet around. That's genuinely it, his entire contribution to the cause. I've been on light duties and caught him watching Storage Wars. It isn't an isolated incident. The business is riddled with them.

We have had several different managers and they just don't know what they are doing. It might not necessarily be their fault that they don't know what staff are better on what duties and what works best for the section but in all honesty our office seems to run more smoothly without their interference. The fact that many of them seem content to stand around, perhaps giving a 5 minute 'huddle' without doing any deliveries, I have ask myself why on earth are Royal Mail wasting this sort of money??

Ours constantly reminds us that there's IPS to do, the lorry has arrived, don't forget to get your mini Yorks or forget to take them back, sign on sign off, park vans in allotted bays, PDA to charge!!!!!

Surely it is only a matter of time before Royal Mail start forcing them out the door/making them Part Time? I've been in a few offices, and "Office Porter" would be a better title for what many of them actually do. Once everybodys out the door it's even harder to justify a FT position.

Thats why theyve been recruiting part time managers all over. They finish at about 10am once the posties have left. Im sure it makes the full time managers jobs harder, working with a part timer because they wont be around to deliver uncovered duties and cut offs

It’s a massive no from me!, he needs to go he looks a worried man,he manages us and a nearby office which he spends his day at,it runs fine without him under a just get on with it workforce,he never fights our corner but then he’s managed from above it can’t be nice but hay it is what it is,bombarded with stuff to sign and does his best to motivate us with little success,with loaning and lapsing and questioning what time we finish etc ,if he stayed and managed us he’d see and not think!,

I know ours used to work so much better when they wernt there,and the atmosphere was so much better as he was such a nasty piece of work.

My office seems to employ more managers than they do postmen. Yet they want to save money. We have walks to cover in our office every day. Personally, I don't know why we need 7 managers on a Tuesday. We hardly see them anyway, they are all on their computers or phones in the office.
