Illness procedures

Hello does anyone know the correct procedure for notifying royal mail that you are unable to work due to illness.
I ask as at our office the process seems very vague.
Is it that you must ring in your place of work to let them know you are unable to attend due to illness.
Then ring in every day you do not attend.
Or once you have rang royal mail to say you are ill you don't need to notify them until you are fit to work

Ring in prior to your start time on your first day of absence to let them know you won't be attending. Then come to an AGREEMENT between you and whichever screw you talk as to the kind of contact and the frequency you should adhere to. Don't let them tell you that you must phone in every day, if you get any s**t about it. involve the union pdq.

The attendance procedure describes on how to set up maintaining contact details by telephone, text message or e-mail. My preference would be a combination of telephone/ text message or telephone/e-mail as you will hold some proof that the contact was made.

It is not necessary to ring in every day that will depend on what contact arrangements you have mutually agreed on.

Dependant on your length of absence you are more than likely to receive a request to attend for an interview or even a home visit but this does not have to take place without your consent.

For the first 7 days of absence a self-certificate and hence a doctor " fit Note" detailing your medical condition and if adjustments are indicated in the relevant boxes to be ticked or qualified may have a bearing if you wish to attend for an interview.

RM regards a 2 week absence as long term sick.

General points
• Employees should make every effort to meet the attendance standards

• Employees will be treated with dignity and respect and their attendance record considered on an individual basis, taking into account previous attendance history and any mitigating factors

• Employees will be provided with advice and support to help them meet the standards

• All sickness absences are assumed to be genuine and should be discussed between the employee and the manager on return to work

• Where an employee’s attendance is becoming a cause of concern, an informal discussion should normally take place to identify and address any issues

• Where there has been no improvement following informal discussion the manager will consider whether to arrange an interview under the formal procedure

• The formal procedure has three stages: two reviews and in the absence of an improvement, consideration of dismissal

• Employees will receive sick pay in line with the provisions set out in the Sick Pay Policy

This Agreement applies to all employees in CWU represented grades working for Royal Mail Group Ltd,

Notifying absence and maintaining contact;

• Employees will advise of their absence before the commencement of the shift in accordance with the arrangements set out for their office

• Discussion will cover the reason for absence, likely duration and anticipated return date and any support which Royal Mail may be able to offer

• The employee and manager should seek to agree an appropriate time and date for reviewing together all but very short absences

If you are off sick and your day off falls on a weekend. are the weekend days included in the sick days off if you are well enough to go back on the monday

Phone on first day of sickness then day 4 then day 9. After that it's with LOCAL agreement with dom ( more bullshit). Where's your rep? Hope this is not another office without union representatives which seems to be happening all to often these days and do not be pressurised into going back to work until 100% fit for duty.

Thanks navalron . We do have a rep unfortunately he is about as useless as a chocolate tea pot and never tells us anything. Even after having meetings with the dom or says he doesn't know . Thats why i posted here . Thanks again

Can you have excessive contact?

Been contacted twice from office this week and haven't been on sick a week and that doesn't include phoning in on first day of going on sick and going in for a face to face.

Thier trying to pressure you into going back to work, don't only go back when you're ready. The contact seems to be different depending which office you work in. You have to agree what type of contact is required and how often.

Can anyone tell me what happens if 2 periods of sickness are linked to the same illness/cause? I had my 1st days off and just had another 2 days and the doctor has said they are linked due to medication imbalance and heat.
