Security Question

Is Royal Mail legally obliged to have 2 people open up on a morning for security reasons or can they get away with 1?

As a driver working nights all do’s are opened up during the night with just one person it doesn’t always feel safe at some places but that’s the way the job as gone

what would happen if you had an accident while unloading your vehicle and the result of this you were unconscious.There must be a back up in place or this is unsafe under the SSOW as any delay in getting assistance to you could have srious consequences.

No there is no back up in place it’s been one person opening do’s on nights for a number of years now and there are a few that are well out of the way in not the most desirable areas,I suppose your mobile phone is the only thing that can help you if something went wrong

Just a note on this topic,just as a reward for being last back on a Saturday you get to set the alarm and lock the office and lock the yard gates,so your even later getting home,what a treat for us slow oldies,I take it this is in order,is there a policy on this connected to security etc?

Imagine if you didn't lock up properly and something happened , hopefully you've been trained how to set the alarm otherwise the managers going to have to explain why he wasn't there to set it .

Yes well it’s simple enough but is it for us to do ? the boss is long gone and we do it in our own ,just where do we stand,when your last back,it’s good to walk in passed the bag of Mail from rural collections that’s doesn’t connect with them noon dispatch cos we are out later following revision,it’s all done on good will last back lock up,

Just a thought what happens with the keys for the yard gates once you have locked them and how is access to these keys obtained. Is the office keys on the same key ring as the keys for the yard gates? Does it also mean if you have to take the yard keys home then you have to be the first in to the office the following day to unlock them ?

How do you use your mobile phone when you are unconscious or having a cardiac arrest. The various scenarios that could occur with this situation should have beem scrutinised under a risk assessment and fail to understand it having been agreed within the SSOW manual. RM continually state that H&S of its employees are paramount then how they have allowed this and put cost savings to the forefront is unexcuseable. Once again it will take something to happen that may force them to reconsider. What does your H&S rep being saying about it?

We don’t have a union rep and we don’t have a health and safety rep,nobody has the time or incentive to do these jobs anymore,we seem a beaten workforce now,with all these changes coming in and the welfare of its staff sadly way down the list now

Yes but could you specifically answer my question in relation to the yard keys.
