Why shelf stacking at Tesco pays better than RM Overtime

Post by OnceOnly »

So in Outer London, RM Overtime is paid £11.49 for the first ten hours and £11.10 thereafter. RM overtime does not attract an Employers Pension Contribution, nor does it have Sick Pay or Holiday Pay.

Look at Shelf Stacking in Tesco: in outer London it pays £8.57 to new starters, except on Sunday when it is time an a quarter - £10.71.

BUT Tesco pay Holiday pay based on your average earnings (unlike RM), and you get sick pay and a pension contribution up to 7.5% (again unlike RM), and altogether that's worth an extra 25% = £12.05 an hour, effectively.

And if you do nights at Tesco, it's just as good.

So shelf stacking in Tesco on a Sunday is worth more to you than flogging yourself to death trying to support a [former] service which struggles to recruit and retain staff.

In other words - if you have time to do regular overtime with RM then you are better off getting a second job with Tesco. Nice init that shelf stacking pays better than what we do.

(Oh, and working at Tesco gets you 10% off your food shopping there, upto a max discount of £700 a year. That's a nice perk init)

I have always thought of supermarket shelf stacking during the night as a good alternative job to working for RM. I imagine those jobs are probably hard to come by though. You mention a pension contribution of 7.5% but RM themselves put more in than that I think. Are you referring to the percentage that is taken from our wages which is 6% . I think we should have the option to increase the amount we contribute from our wages.

RM pay a pension contribution of up to 10% of your pensionable pay (as shown on your payslip, which is a max of 39hrs).

So if you're working 69 hrs a week then that's 30 hrs each week which has NO Pension NO Holiday Pay NO Sick Pay.

If you're a Part-Timer doing overtime to make up the difference then it's even worse. RM are getting a very good deal out of Overtime

Yes Royal Mail have a good deal and we don’t blame the union for that.
But try and actually work 60 hours a week in Tesco, where you actually have to work every single minute you’re being paid for. Not to mention there’s not that much overtime for a single person in any shop I’ve ever worked at

The only overtime available at our place is usually taken by the brown nosers as long as it doesn't involve actually having to work the hours of course

It seems it's different at my local ASDA, each time I go the staff there are more often than not chatting quite happily to one another.

We never finish early these days, the last few years people just start shortening/skipping their breaks or coming in before their time and running faster with heavier bags so they can fool themselves into thinking they are getting off early. I watch my time very closely, and I work every minute I'm paid even on the quiet days, just like they do in Tesco, McDonalds or a factory production line. RM ain't soft.

Overtime is always gobbled up by the same few who get in early to snaffle it all up anyway, it's always a race to the bottom in this company.

RM operates differently to most other businesses. In somewhere like Tesco you would come in on time, do as much as is required then go home at finish time. In RM in some offices inefficiency is rewarded handsomely. In all offices the amount of work varies greatly and expectation is that everything will at least be attempted to be delivered on that day. If on the odd occasion you complete before your duty ends RM could throw their rattle out of the pram. On the other hand we invariably go over our duty time without any break being taken and the RM/CWU don't want to know.
