I think it depends on the situation. If a ballot is held then no union members should go against the vote. Even if that vote is for No strike. There was a post on here when the Union gutycalled a local walk out, it was voted down but he and some of his members went out anyway. Who would be the Scab in this case ???

So I'm taking an unpopular side:

I've heard of walkouts that weren't justified (or an offical walkout).

I know that personally a prolonged walkout is not possible for me as I need over half my wages to pay my rent/bills/food each week and will get notice if I don't pay.

So it depends completely on the situation.

I also know I've had some reps who were total scum and a disgrace.

I haven't been working again for long, after 5yrs, so don't have much saved up and my rent/bills (I rent a room in London) is over half my wages so if we're out for over a week, I have no money or overdraft to live on.

Me and the mrs both work in royal mail same office,both voted YES always have done and always will ,we dont have kids,but we have a mortgage,finance on our car and all the other bits and bobs that go with day to day living,so we have a lot to loose but we both are not prepared to let leighton and crozier smash us the union and wreck everything we have worked for in the last 20 odd years .If it does come to an all out strike our credit cards are gonna take one hell of a beating,which in the long run will be worth it ,as we will WIN this dispute as long as we ALL STICK TOGETHER

A great way to get support from your fellow union members. Call them strike breakers and scum and threaten them with harassment before they have evn cast a vote. Democracy in action?

How do you define scab?

Are non members strike breakers as they have to come into work were as members dont in strike action?

Ive had a non member approach me and ask for a membership form simply as he didnt want to be coming into work whilst his colleaugues were out on strike.

Now he is in the challenge is to convince of the merits of membership so he genuinley wants to be part of the CWU. First time of union membership in any union for him, so some what of a responsibiity on my shoulders to make sure its a postive experience for him!

I am sorry I don't think this is correct. strike breakers should not be in the union if they go against a democratic vote. But calling them scum is IMHO wrong they may have strong convictions as to why they cross the picket line. They believe they are doing the right thing just as we who strike will believe we are doing the right thing.

Millions of people fought in 2 world wars so people could have their own opinions and not be dictated too. I personally have lost mates in the forces who believed they were defending the right to free speech.

I personally would never cross a picket line and I may never speak to a "Scab" again but they are entitled to their own opinions we just have to show them the error of their ways by well reasoned argument and not name calling.
