Delivery Method Trials and its impact

Post by Martin Walsh »

You will recall that within the National Agreement , it was agreed to trail different ways of prepping Mail for delivery other than throwing work into a sorting frame.

The eight delivery offices offices which are Included within the trials will all use a different method other than prepping all the work into the frame.

In Stoke Newington’s case the trial office in London they will use the following method for 6 months.

All Wave 1 work not to sorted into a frame. Currently Stoke Newington have 77% Of sequencing work on the first wave. However the Mount Pleasant Mail Centre which serves Stoke Newington has 90% of sequencing available before 01:30 in the morning so the aim will be to increase the 77% to 90% first wave.

The manual and second wave of sequencing will thrown into the prep frame and than benched merged with the first wave of sequenced to create one bundle of Mail for delivery.

D2D will not be thrown into the frame instead either 20% if you don’t Delivery D2D on Saturday or 17% will be taken out and than whilst out on delivery will create a second bundle.

Royal Mail believe that this sorting method will save them 25 minutes per day off each delivery duty.

The issues this creates in a Delivery Office are the following :

1. As the first wave of work is not thrown up , at the start of duty there is no work prepared in the office.

2. There is no work for double prep.

3 As there are no work on frames apart from D2D collation than everyone is required on the IPS. The problem than is due to the deployment of inward working methods there is not enough IPS frames for all the staff who no longer have any work on their frames until the manual is sorted and wave 2 arrival arrives.

4. One good thing is that no one can start early as there is no work to perform until the IPS is sorted.

The start up meeting is 29th June. This is why the shorter working week was a priority.

Do they have a plan B for busy days when the DOs will maybe get double the number of boxes for wave 1 or where there ends up being extra for wave 2?

Sounds like the recipe for disaster especially D2d.

What he said is the D2D are collated. So you have a bundle of D2D at the back of your mail. It isn't difficult.
I may be wrong but I think it highly unlikely that the Stoke Newington office would have 7 lots of D2D for 2 reasons.
1. There is a lot of competition that is cheaper than RM for leaflet distribution.
2, Quality.

1. How does the D2D become a second bundle? Is it collated indoors or are we expected to merge it outdoor?

2. Are the CWU aware of the phrase "proof of concept". In layman's terms that's supposed to be the phase between the idea popping into someone's head and any trial. It's the bit where they show us that it's even feasible to carry a bundle of mail, 6 D2D, a PDA, a parcel and open a gate without playing postman jenga. Did this phase even happen and if so were you present dingo?

How would this work when a bulk posting for every call comes in that isn't sequenced and has to bench merged into the 1st wave? I don't see them saving 25 minutes then!

That was an early version of Burroughs' The Naked Lunch wasn't it? Made no f***ing sense either.
Do RM routinely employ people with head injuries to come up with these schemes?

Imagine you have a packet for 42 Acacia Avenue.
You would find 42 Acacia Avenue in your bundle and mark it in your preferred fashion - write a P on the letter or introduce a 739 card as a reminder.
Imagine you now have a packet for 50 Acacia Avenue …
Follow the same procedure.

Is someone going to ask how you do redirections?

So first wave mech is not put in the frame, second wave mech and manual is put in the frame then slotted into the correct place in the first wave mech. Where will this happen? Do we empty the 1st wave from the tray onto the bench then slot the second wave into the first wave? We then bundle up and count out the correct amount of d2d for that bundle? Is the new relationship between RM and CWU a performance art piece? Am I having a stroke?

I read that.
He also said no-one can start early as there is no work.
Does that include D2D collation? None of that really explains how this got past the proof of concept phase. It took me 8 minutes to prep the one tray of sequence I had today, it would have taken twice that to merge the manual....manually.

that's all well and good if you don't get any pkts , parcels , but when you get 100 + a day then it may take a tad longer than royal fail thinks , and will we all get the same amount of mail everyday so theres no need for indoor work plans , etc .
