2nd class mail being posted as 1st class

I what to bring this matter up, I have been noticing that on a Saturday 2nd class mail that is being posted on the previous Friday is being pushed through the system for delivery on a Saturday. Is that allowed to happen?

I’ve noticed this too, on other days also.
Years ago our Dom allowed us to leave it to the following working day. And so he should have done too.
Otherwise it’s devaluing 1st class.

Why shouldn’t it be allowed to happen? Surely if all the 1st class Mail has gone through then they can process some second class? Yes, typically it takes 2-3 days but it doesn’t mean it can’t take longer or less!

Plus it gives some weekend operators some overtime. Pushing 1st onto 2nd would be a problem but 2nd processed and delivered before it should be? WGAF?

This used to happen regularly when our local mail centre was open.Now its the opposite mags like the beano and radio times which normally come on Saturday and Tuesday are quite often a couple of days late metre pouches from firms go missing and I get two of each the next day haven't got the time to check dates on other stuff

I suppose the argument would be why pay the extra for first class? If you have a premium product it's never a smart move to undermine it with a similar cheaper product unless it's part of a longer term plan to remove one or the other.

I checked but never saw any early 2nd class. As far as I'm aware 2nd class being sorted early is a big no no.

Been happening for ages in our office, one of our eagle eyed bods raised it with the DOM, not sure what response he got though.
It does devalue First Class.

It does actually make a lot of sense - 1st class gets there next day at a cost and 2nd class could be skewed to even the workload. Imagine no easy Tuesdays and sensible Wednesdays! :)

This has also been happening in our office for some time. The problem for us is its actually made some busy days even busier than they need to be. Its been appearing regularly in our walk sequenced boxes. However when you look at our manual IPS received from the mail centre, nearly all of it could have gone through the walk sorting machines. This in turn means longer IPS sorting and later departure times from the office. Our DOM is aware of it but is either unwilling or unable to do anything about it.

Also in the long term firms sending out mail will soon realise its just no point posting an item first class, thus depriving the company of further revenue.

Wave 1 or wave 2?

The early 2nd class can turn up in either wave. However the local stuff seems more prevalent. The DOM says the mail centre has a sort to clear policy similar to clearing our delivery office. I would not know if that is true or not.

There shouldn't be any 2C in wave 1 as that's what's been posted in the area covered by the MC and DSA. Wave 2 you'd expect to see some as that's stuff that's come into the area covered by the MC during th night.
