Hi. I recently lost my dad just 5 weeks ago and i'm still currently on sick. I still have my mum who is close to 80, can't drive and now has to rely on her children (and mainly me becuase I live the closest) to take her places, shopping, bank, doctors etc. Anyway a friend who has many many years as a RM employee told me about flexible working and that I should apply for it to condense my hours into 4 days from 5. Im only part time on a 28hr contract and work 5hrs 36m per day on my own duty with a rolling day off (wed-sat). There are a lot of cover people in our office that work more hours than me (32hrs) that work over 4 days with a monday and tuesday off but some always come in both those days as overtime every single week.
What I want to know is, what case do I have by applying to have one day a week free to help my mum ( my plan is a Monday) and to consoldate my 28hrs over 4 days instead. I know I have to apply for it and its down to the manager to make the final decision but im sure they would need a strong case to reject me and if there is plenty of overtime anyway on a monday and other part timers are reguarly been brought into work that day then do I have a strong case seeing as overtime is there that day? I would like this as a trial to view to permanent. It would also be put forward that I would not lose my duty.

You have every right to apply for flexible working. You need the application form which is 6 pages long and only your local rep can help you as you have to jusify it to the business.
If your unit rep wont help you get the delivery area rep to help you or even ring your local branch.
Whatever you wish to try and get put it down in the form and you might need another option as a compromise but your circumstances dictate that you can do this.
Unfortunately the process can take up to 3 months if they want to drag it out but again a good rep can help process it through
