I have just came across RM official figures from 2012/13 which stated they delivered 13 billion letters. So if mails down, mails down why are the new figures 16 billion letters for 2016/17. It is buried in RM own reports on the retirement of boys on August this year and the promotion of due to the board. I posted several weeks ago that they were going to bin parcel force and now Leeds mail centre is having trials for bigger and bulky items to be sorted. Also it states that many postie s will become letter and parcels staff under sue...Where is the union on this if me, an ex postman drivers can dig this out. Some is even on rmtv. So that's why RM fleet are moving to transit type has size. Get ready to look like the overloaded donkey on the adverts.

No chance! We've not got the space, staff or van capacity to take on all of Parcel Force's work

if its true what you have posted (where did you dig those figures from ?) and those figures are correct, it beggars belief that no senior union rep or hierarchy have failed to make a comment on this. although, if it IS true, they'll have some garbage for an answer!!

Personally i've no doubt that letters are down (this week has been very light so far) but packets and less staff more than make up for the the decrease

There isn't the capacity in terms of the network as a whole, delivery duty time, or yard/parking space for transit sized vans. Xmas 2017 showed what happens when we get increased amounts of mail coming through now - we had to make a choice what to deliver!! If they want to do that we would have to reverse all the downsizing that has occurred for too many years to mention.

Its the lie of the century to suggest that mail is down. Other than TNT who probably constitute less than 1% of items delivered in the UK, who else is out there delivering all this business bumpf, catalogues and farmfoods/domino's pizza leaflets. Seriously, the company could ramp up mail volumes if they wanted because no one else is delivering it on the scale that we do!! I've yet to see mail volumes decline and from delivering 3 bags of mail to now delivering at least 7, my outdoor workload delivering on the streets has more than doubled.

Also, I can't see Royal Mail doing away with Parcel Force just yet either because the only reason we seem to be delivering more larger items is because they are now delivering more parcels as well. Sure, there are one or two new transit vans in our yard but a wholesale change would take quite a few years yet. If large parcels continue to grow then I can see the company going back to how it was with parcel only delivery transit van drivers and mail/small packet drivers in the smaller vans. Personally, I think we should be offering our customers more choice and if they want a Sunday delivery of their parcel, then we should surely provide it.

Sundays will happen at some point but RM will charge a premium for it and it would be limited mail streams, maybe Tracked 24 and Specials

Letters are down. What causes people to think otherwise is that walk sizes have generally increased proportionally at least as much as letter volumes have declined. Also the (linked) fact that now if you have a 100% call rate (elections, etc), that impacts far, far more than it did ten years ago when letter volumes were much higher. And of course the increase in packet volumes has been huge, which obviously also impacts on delivery times.

To be honest, I wouldn't be against a Sunday delivery of specific items. I personally wouldn't like it, but going forward as a business, it would make sense. As with everything in RM, it's the implementation that matters - weekend packet deliveries may suit certain employee's.

The one thing certain to happen is packet traffic increasing, and speaking for my own office ( but more than likely nationwide ) the system we have at the minute is already unsustainable.
