Taking vans home

Does anyone know the criteria or is there a policy to view on people taking vans home. I ask because when the P&L duties were first discussed we were told that people would be able to take the van home at the end of the day. This then never happened with different managers all coming up with different reasons as to why it couldn’t happen - security, breakdown, sickness etc etc. We have a chronic parking problem at our place now and where we are based makes it impossible for people to get there by any other mode except car,bike moped.

Our place is the same as yours on a industrial estate miles from anywhere, we have taken vans home from day one, we have no space like your place. find out hfrom the Union seems funny some can take vans home some can’t.

In the same boat, folk taking vans home for years, then last year DOM says no vans to be takin home, he says it a national thing but we the only office doing it round our way, another cash saving idea he's thought up to save on his budget so he hits his bonues

We also have been talking the vans home from the start, various doms have tried to end this, however because we have to start our deliveries 8 miles from the depot,we finish at the end of our last item,meaning we are unable to drive back to our depot due to the time factors

So you take all your p739 items, pda etc and leave them in the van overnight? Think your DOM would be in for a nasty shock if anything happened once the van was parked up.

There is a overnight vehicle retention policy and there is a criteria for the process of being allowed to take them home. They wont consider how many parking spaces there is for employees or how far away you have to park as its not their issue supposedly. Tends to occur when tgere is not enough spaces for all rm vans on site or offices where it was always standard abd DOM has never botheted to challenge it.

Just to clarify, all p739's are dropped off at a local po. We also have to sign a declaration that the van is parked outside our house, the travelling time could not be built in as we would go over our time on most days

As usual it's all down to what suits RM... in my previous office there was only room for 8 vans (out of 18!) to be parked in the yard over night so management were desperate for us to take them home, at my current office where there's ample room for all the vans it's a complete no no.

Every DO has different policy’s on this. Also it’s a case of if the face fits wether you are allowed it home or not. Me personally live on a country road on a farm away from prying eyes & im not allowed the van home, but a fella who lives in a housing estate, parks on the footpath at night & is not even 3 miles from the DO gets the van home.... laughable really.

We have a yard that's too small for the number of vans we have, so a manager we had a few years back proposed letting people take the "extra" vehicles home. Of course, the people who immediately volunteered to do this where the ones who lived 20+ miles away. They saw an instant decrease in the amount of money they where spending on fuel each week, though of course it just meant that the company was picking up the tab instead and after a couple of months of our fuel bills going sky high there was a sudden change of policy.

People do have retentions at our place, I believe one of the rules is you must have a drive to park it on though. They stopped people taking vans home who did afternoon collections a while ago which most used to do.

It's allowed if you follow the correct procedures and your DOM gives the go ahead currently.

Logically speaking though it is costing RM money in terms of diesal and wear & tear etc on the vans. In addition in terms of the HMRC it could be viewed as a tax perk or similar to a company car. Therefore I and others think it will eventually be stopped by RM. So enjoy it while you can if you are currently doing it.
