Arrived at the DO car park 15 minutes early yesterday due to no traffic to find a gate meeting going on and managed to catch the last five minutes. Now I know you can't please all of the people all of the time, but this is why for me a lot of part timers are a bit meh about it all and feel out of the loop.
If it wasn't for this forum I would be absolutely none the wiser about what was going on. We're never told about gate meetings just in case we want to come in a bit earlier to attend and I wonder how many bother to read the minimal information posted on the union board that is located in a tucked away corner towards the back?
In our DO there is a real sense of them and us between the full and part-timers and unless you actively seek out information from both management and the rep you're really just the proverbial mushroom.
On the odd occasion another part timer works with me on my round I'm actually either quite shocked at their lack of knowledge concerning what's going on or dismayed by the fact that they're basing their decision solely on what the bloke they work with a lot thinks.
"Well, they're full time aren't they, so they know what's what, don't they?"
It's staggering really, that with all this knowledge at our fingertips so many people can't develop and form an opinion of their own. But what's really frustrating is that there are a lot of part timers who don't even know that there's an opinion to be had and the Union, certainly in our DO, are forgetting/ overlooking them.

How many people at your DO come in before their proper start time (and approx what % of them are PT)?

Obviously can't say exact figures, but there were part timers who weren't present at gate meeting and later arrived at their nine/nine thirty start time if that's what you're getting at.SpacePhoenix wrote:How many people at your DO come in before their proper start time (and approx what % of them are PT)?
I don't think there's much of an early start culture in ours amongst part timers. Full timers waiting with a loaded van in the yard for their partner is not an uncommon sight. I'm sat in my car typing this before I start and I can see two other part timers in theirs, put it that way. Even though it's Saturday

This is a big issue for the union, often overlooked in our DO. The p/t feel a separate entity unless they are kept informed, only natural, and this is pounced on by management time and again as a way of putting worker against worker and getting them to cover all left over work ('lazy f/timers etc', not overloaded workers as often the case). They feel pretty powerless.

That's not relevant, he walked in early by chance of traffic and found HIS union having a gate meeting that HE and other PT staff weren't told about. That's the problem and it's probably a problem nationwide. Union care about full time jobs, PT... Mehhhh they might get round to caring about them eventually when PT out number for the votes. PT sold a dream of equal value in this agreement before the ballot. You read it and they have been an afterthought.

If it's that much of a problem, has any PT put themselves forward to be a rep?panch1989 wrote:SpacePhoenix wrote:How many people at your DO come in before their proper start time (and approx what % of them are PT)?

Our DO has just got a new rep and he's P/T, some F/T don't respect his views at all and make out he hasn't got a clue. No solidarity. He tries to include all the members, but because of the different start times it is difficult for him.

The coming is is not a problem it is the working before the start time that is the problem but if RM want to turn it into a factory they are welcome productivity will take a dive as all Orwellian projects do it's a bit like the cleaning lady getting the CEO'S ass out of bed if she was that motivated would she still be in it?SpacePhoenix wrote:How many people at your DO come in before their proper start time (and approx what % of them are PT)?

It's a farce, and it's lazy and wankey reps and management.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
