Rest day/Special Leave

Post by Dingo99 »

Hi guys just after some advice please. My Grandfather passed away a few weeks ago and when I found out I told my DOM and he said just tell me the date and I'll sort it out for you. I thought great I will get a days special leave to attend his funeral. Anyway fast forward to the 8th January this year I told him the date which is this Friday the 28th January and he texted me back telling me it was fine and to enjoy my annual leave. Anyway since the 8th January he has not informed me that he couldn't give me special leave and that I would need had to swap my rest day, anyway today is my rest day and my DOM phoned me at 7am which I was not pleased about basically saying I was due in today and he couldn't let me have today AND Friday off for the funeral, anyway I told him no it's my rest day and I can't come in and he just said okay see you tomorrow. My question is what will happen will he put me down as sick/awol? Bit worried to be honest but he is in the wrong he could have told me yesterday that I was due in but he says nothing then phones me at my start time on my rest day, not happy!

Thanks

Dan

You're entitled to one day special leave with pay and you have given him enough notice, get your rep on to it!
• If a member of your family, e.g. grandparent or parent-in-law passes away, your manager can give you
one day’s paid leave to attend the funeral.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Same thing happened to me, manager said i wasn't entitled to special leave. I walked into his office next day with a copy of the agreement. And that was the end of that. Some managers simply don't have a clue and don't bother to find out.

Get this guys, he says I should have swapped my day off or booked a day off as annual leave (have none left) and he can't grant me Special Leave, so I will have to take Friday as unpaid, and the only way I can recoup the money is by working my day off next week. I have sent him Royal Mail's Special Leave Policy and will get on to my rep if he doesn't pay me for it!

The manager is so wrong here. Print the agreement off and show it to him. If he still won't budge then get your union rep to take action fast. The agreement is clear you are allowed 1 day off for the funeral of a grandparent paid!

Cheers guys, I have emailed him and given him the URL of the agreement off the CWU website regarding special leave, as you suggest, if he still claims I can't have it paid I will phone my rep up, not having this!

I’m really sorry for your loss. You u need compassion, not an idiot manager trying any means to get you to work more.
