On the Royal Mail jobs page is a P t Managers cover 4 hrs a day, the job is in St Albans so there is the London allowance but it was the pay figure the shocked me £30,000 with a day of, plus bonus if the offices hit there targets. RM moan we are paid two much but by the looks of things we are paid 2nd rate.

The PT Cover Managers are able [expected] to take out front line overtime to make up their money.

If you go for Cover Manager, and you tick the box of "I will accept a Part Time position if offered" then you are guaranteed to jump to the top of the list. It's all about saving money these days; strangely as all the offices I've ever worked in seem to work better when there's no Manager to cause chaos.

These jobs are advertised when you go to the public Royal Mail jobs site, it says if you are already an employee then apply through the careers site meaning “success factors”. But when you search on it the jobs aren’t listed!? & yes I am thinking of going to the dark side!!

I think they're trying to bring in people with actual managerial experience and that's why they're not advertising on 'success' factors.

It's silly really because whatever they do, it fails. There are too many existing managers - at all levels - who are lazy and/or incompetent and/or spineless (there are a few notable exceptions). Many managers could pass the buck to Olympic standard. The problem is that new managers from outside may be decent managers but they lack any knowledge of how RM really works, and by the time they attain that knowledge they tend to have given up and started to take the easy options like most of their colleagues. Equally the graduates are often smart but have the same lack of understanding. The best managers tend to be postmen who are made up - but in all fairness they often prove the worst too. And the decent managers very seldom seem to get promoted much.
