Reducing hours

Im considering asking to have my working hours halved due to my lifelong health condition. I am struggling to work full shifts ontop of daily life, i need to find a private doctor as the nhs cant treat me properly and im just not back to normal after 3-4 years of living with my condition but need to make money to survive. Halving my hours would be a great help as i could manage those hours, get some earnings to continue to pay for life and my private treatment until im all fixed up. How do i go about doing this? and eventually after a year or 2 i could return to normal hours or wait until a signing comes up as i have some good seniority to secure a decent enough duty. And i am covered by the equality act via OH assit...

As you are requesting the reduction of hours this would not be a " BUY DOWN OF HOURS" scenario and therefore there would be no compensatory payment. As you have not disclosed your actual medical condition for personal reasons it would be difficult to determine if your condition is within the realms of the EA 2010 and your first course of action would be to request a referral to OH Assist firstly to determine if your condition is covered by the EA 2010. The referral would be a 20 minute telephone conversation with OH Assist where you can explain the problems you have completing a full time duty and they in turn will send a report and recommendations to your manager.
On receipt of the OH Assist report then your manager would make the decision on your reduction of hours and if any reasonable adjustments to be made to your duty to be tailored to your medical condition if you qualify under the EA 2010. Remember you will need to ensure that the office you work from are in a position to give you reasonable adjustments to your duty.

be careful you say you have good seniority but a reduction in hours could mean a equivalent reduction in any pension already built up when you retire!
ie as i understand it? 40 hours down to 20 hours after 10 years you will receive a part time pension

Yes i fall under thr equality act and im legally disabled. Im not to bothered about a compensatory payment. My condition has me suffering with fatigue, tiredness and left with no energy. Its crunch time for me either i can get my hours down or ill be handing my notice in. All will prevail this week im sure...

I have to be realistic with pensions and get used to the fact that i more than likely wont live until 70 to see any of it.
