If you are sick half way through bereavement leave do you loose that entitlement? Doesn't seem fair if so. Thanks.

Not sure I understand the question.

Bereavement leave (or special leave) is leave given for a specific reason for a specific time or incident. It does not form part of entitlement statutory or otherwise. If you are sick whilst on Special Leave you won't be owed anything back like you would be on annual leave.

Therefore if you are given 2 weeks special leave and feel ill when on it, you can declare it as sick leave if you want but it doesn't mean you can add more leave on the end because you changed the reason you were off.

Well, in the week after my mum died, I got rushed into hospital, if I hadn't let them know that fact, I'd have had rest of week paid special instead of sick.

Well sorry for your loss, but your pay shouldn't have been affected if you were on Special Paid leave, and for sick, you would have been paid if you had done more than a year. Which means the reason for your absence shouldn't have affected your wage.

Of course, if it was unpaid special the manager needs a slap. Of course, they also need a slap if they issue a stage so soon after your mothers passing, any reasonable manager would have ignored that sickness period without having to be told.

Thanks mate, really appreciate your condolences. No the money was never an issue. My gripe is that there would have been no sickness on my record if I'd not been honest and told them had been rushed to hospital ,as I'd already been granted paid special leave for the full week. Amazing that you can get flu on a weeks anual leave and get the time back, but not in my (very stressful and upsetting) circumstances. Thanks again for your concerns ,have a lovely Christmas. Atb .
