Rest days over Christmas.

Post by F3zza »

Can you be forced to work your rest days during the Christmas period?
Or if you're on a assigned walk can management change your normal rest days?

If they can change your rest days do they have to give you a period of notice?
Was called today on my rest day and told I had to go into work as my rest day had been changed. I refused.
No one told me it had been changed and the Manager was being passive aggressive and said we need to have a chat tomorrow.

Working your rest day would mean doing more than your contracted hours. So no they can't make you work it.

Thank you for the reply. Can they change the rest day without prior notice?

Well exactly. That was my point, but I was told they can change the rest day if they need to and that today they needed to?

Pretty sure if they want to change your working hours you need 28 days notice but I’m sure someone else will confirm/put me straight

We have sheets on the notice board showing what everyone is doing each day of every week sometimes for up to two months in advance. But you are required to have a look at them occasionally to see if something has changed. The DOM can move you to a different walk or even to a walk at a different office if they need to. I think they can also change your day off if they need to but they should really tell you face to face out of politeness if for no other reason. They can also change your rota of days off permanently if they need to for operational reasons. That has happened to me and at least one other postie in my DO.

They shouldn't change your rest day willy nilly.
Get rep on to it.
Suppose you had something planned on your rest day?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Couple of things:

1. If you weren't told your rest day had been changed & you had then taken the day off you are typically due, then there's no problem as it was down to manager incompetence & it's a non-issue as far as you should be concerned as you can't then be contacted & be expected to drop everything to attend after they had realised that they had f****d up.

2. They have to give you some form of notice before a (significant) change in normal working hours & days off unless you actually agree. Now how much notice do they have to give, I'm not 100% sure, I'd surmise though it's a minimum of 7 days.. but don't quote me.

As I understand it a significant change is one where your contract is changed and that is normally 28 days notice.

Can Managers change your rest day: Technically yes they can, but they have to give you reasonable notice and they can't change the total amount of your contract hours,

Reasonable Notice is open to interpretation, but certainly telling you on the actual day is not reasonable notice and this should be pointed out at the meeting.

Thank you for all the replies and information.
This forum is a godsend.
Went into work all fired up but the chat never happened. In fact he never even mentioned it.
Wondering if I should raise it with the union rep when he's in tomorrow or just let it go?

Perhaps the manager realised he made an error, or someone higher told him so he may have decided not to pursue it any further, seeing as you are in the right it maybe worth pursuing it with the manager just to see him grovel :Very Happy

I could have guessed this would have happened, he didn't mention it because he was the one that made the f**k up & he knew it. He probably even knew it when he phoned you trying to pressure/blackmail you into coming in as if you were due.

As for bringing it up, it depends how much he annoyed you really, I don't really like the fact that managers think they can get away with passive aggressive statements or threats but that's just me. :cuppa
