Why would you want to resign while you are still sick. Unless you have another job to go to or you have sufficient finances that it does not matter to you?

You can resign by putting your resignation in writing and give them the statutory notice which is 1 week.
Not knowing your length of service why would you want to terminate your employment when you are receiving sick pay when your off and getting close to Christmas for the family presents unless you are already fixed up with another job.
I hope I am not detecting that you are under pressure to return to work soonest from management and if this is the case inform your union rep to take the matter up with management.

If that were the case I would hope there would be a discussion about IHR.
Is OP being pressured to return to work now or don't bother coming back at all?

In answer to your question yes you can resign when off sick.
Some contracts at RM require 1 week notice more recent ones in last couple years require 28 days notice.

If you are off sick and have a doctor`s note to send/give your manager, RM will pay you your contract`s hours up to 6 months, providing that you get a sick note for all this time.
Why would you resign if you are sick?
