Year on Year figures - Courier

Post by ArthurPewty »

According to RM's own figures in the Courier, letters are down 5% year on year and packets are up 5% year on year 2016 - 2017. Packets predicted to be up 20% on last Xmas/Black Friday by independent analysts.
Now I'm no ergonomics guru by any means, but a 10 year old could work out that a round with 5% more packets and 5% less letters takes CONSIDERABLY longer to deliver. They might also be able to tell you that if packets are up 20% on last Xmas then deliveries are going to be CONSIDERABLY longer again adding that into the mix. So cumulatively rounds are going to be exponentially longer up til Xmas compared to last year.
So armed with this news, we can expect a whole lot of extra staff brought in on delivery this year right Moya? and no unreal expectations from management? Right? :hmmmm :hmmmm

:Applause :Applause and we have less staff to cope with this increase, not more. Management have their heads in the sand.

Thats not strictly true.

If you deliver 1000 letters a day and there is a 5% reduction you will deliver 50 less letters. If you deliver 50 parcels a day you will have 2.5 more parcels to deliver.
The difference is obviously in the sorting time and how many doors less you have to deliver to. Similarly with the parcels, are those extra two parcels going to be delivered to houses where you have no other mail.
Nothing will change. You will have some days that seem easier and a lot of days that are an absolute drag. You only have to work your hours, so I would not worry what the mix of letters to packets is. You can only do what you can do in your time unless you want the overtime.

Using RM's own figures.

Suppose in 2006 you delivered to 2000 letters/flats and 50 packets to 500 addresses travelling 10km (obviously these figures are just used proportionally as an example)

letters/flats have fallen by 42% (I know it may not seem like it, but bear with me).
packets have increased by 48%
walk length has increased by 22% due to the reduction in the number of walks.

So now you would deliver 1415 letters/flats and 90 packets to 611 addresses travelling 12.2km. (edited as I forgot to add the 22% increase in walk length to letter and packet nos.)

The increase in delivery span from 3.5 hours to 4.5 basically just reflects the increase in distance from 10km to 12.2km.

You may (in fact you do) have a lot less letters to deliver, yet you must still walk the distance and you have substantially more packets to deliver.

Anytime you get a bulk mailing, or anytime packets see a marked rise from the average you're in much more trouble than you were in 2006 because you had fewer calls (every address for 500 DPs is clearly easier than every address for 611) and as we all know, packets tend to eat up time. So the heavy days are much worse delivery-wise (though not worse prep-wise) and of course on the easier days the dreaded flexing raises its ugly head, increasing your letter load, packet load and distance travelled. And of course in many areas new builds are flourishing and having to be absorbed by already stretched deliveries.

Unfortunately for posties, the fact that letters/flats have seen a very substantial decline has meant they walk further and bang on more doors. The job is massively harder now than ten years ago because however much RM might wish otherwise you can't increase walk length in proportion to decrease in letter volume.

Of course the fact that you now have 22% more door to doors to prep and deliver every day doesn't help either. In fact it puts an even bigger dent in the superficial rate of letter decline.

Why dont you try the whole street! As if the postie hasnt got enough to do! I dont know why RM dont put a skip at the end of the road then all the customers can sort through the packets and find their own!!!!!! another load of bullshit then but did it mention how the dutys since p&l 7 years ago in our office , nothing has been adjusted to all the extra work the idiots have thrown at us , new builds , knock on neighbours , increased tracked and pkts and parcels , 2d scanning , post box collections, and so it goes on , the cwu should push for the dutys to be amended to a fair and manageable workload. :evil/mad

Ok I'll admit to reading it, but is it just me or has anyone else noticed that just about every time at the bottom of the long service awards bit there's an apology for getting someone's length of service/name/office they work at wrong, they can't even get something as fundamentally simple as this correct !!

I wish you would explain that to the posties who have 100/120 less delivery points then me and expect me to help prep p/t duties when they have more time inside and less time on delivery.

20% on 50 is 10 not 2.5.
