Allocated holidays

Without going into too much detail. As someone relatively new to the business, has anyone come across newbies being allocated holidays without having a choice of dates? If so, is this something they're allowed to do?

Was always allocated may in my first few years not sure how it is allocated for new starters now

That's what I thought but looking at official laws and regs it looks like they can. Not great but they can.

So I guess for newish starters, it's possible they will allocate them without choice.

I know they definitely can allocate holidays, not just for newbies, but for everyone if they wanted to. Most of us are lucky enough to get choices. I’m going to search for the official blurb.

This is just the general document, not very detailed. Holiday allocation varies from office to office, and as far as I can gather they can do what they like “for operational needs.”

Can my employer tell me when to take my leave?

Your employer can force you to take leave at a particular time as long as they give you at least two weeks' notice.

However, it is common for employer and employee to come to an agreement about the timing of annual leave. If you put in a request for leave, your employer has to have a good reason to refuse it.

I wonder how negiotable the dates will be once they have been allocated but my understanding of it all is that it depends on the operational needs of each office and/or swapping with other people.

Not seeing great positives so far into this role. Not just talking about holidays unfortunately.

Is this not a case of the leave has already been allocated so the new starts who joined afterwards get allocated the available weeks wherever there's a space free, presumably next year they'll take their pick according to whatever system that office uses.

For at least my first three years, I just took what I was given, including odd days left over taken in a block near the end of the year. I had no idea I could ask for a day off using a lieu day.

As far as I understand, the employer can tell you when to take your hols, but he has a responsibility to treat everyone the same. He can't let 3/4 of the office choose when they want and allocate the rest against their wishes. He has to treat everyone the same.

Probably nothing you can do though if the holiday situation was sorted before you started.

Not quite. Employers could use, say, seniority or first-ask-first-get or any other system. But they must be very careful not to discriminate (so seniority doesn't really work for that). Most businesses just use common sense and a bit of give and take. Unfortunately RM prefers a rather monolithic and inflexible approach which those who know can exploit and those who don't lose out.

Just because they have allocated your holidays it does not mean you have to take them then, just ask what other dates are free and you should be able to pick from that list. In November it might have just one spot being the run up to Christmas so its hard to get time off however other months will have three or four spots and its easier.
