Does each walk have a specific time in which it is expected to be completed
I've been told that most walks should be able to be done in 3 and half hours is this true?
If so is the rule different for newbies and at Xmas ?

Every walk should have a full breakdown of timings available which include time you leave the office, travel time, delivery time, and time back at the depot at the end. Some offices are better than others for having these available.
Most deliveries are usually quite similar in each office for total time out of the office but they can vary a lot from office to office so your office may be 3 and a half hours delivery span. The timings are based on the calculated attendance items so Christmas would be expected to take longer as there will be more attendance items. Offices deal with this in different ways, some will have parcel duties, some will take loops off deliveries etc. Allowances for newbies would depend how new you are and also on your managers.

you have a start time and a finish time
The round takes as long as it takes but you don't have to finish it, you can finish at your finish time and if you haven't finished it you bring it back and cut off.
Forget all this 3 and a half hours crap, that was based on only 10 parcels a round and no collections or lapsing

Most walks were planned using old data which at the time said it would utilize all the hours, now we are expected to do the same rounds but adding in the rise in parcels 2d scanning, tracked, deliver to neighbour, collection on delivery, and the loss of full timers in Delivery office's ,all this does is put opg's under more pressure to work faster and harder and cut corners. I would like the up to date data to be put back through the planning and see what it says

In reality, duties should be looked at, assessed & have their "expected" time scales for completion adjusted every few months.

The Royal Mail constantly tells us every few months that the mail volumes are declining & packets are rising, if that's the case then the volumes of mail/packets various duties both outdoor & indoor have been designed for are now out of date & need re-evaluated.

3 and a half hour walks? I wish.
We left our office yesterday at 9.20, signed off at 3.45.
Over 6 hours out on delivery.
I know we should have cut off, before anyone starts..

3 and a half hours walk, oh yeah I remember them, takes between approx 4 and half to 5 and half for us for the last 7yrs since they brought in shared van duties.

Why?
The duty is assessed on a daily basis by the person doing it.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Completely agree - even though the problem in assessing a duty often depends on who is actually doing it, and more importantly, how they are doing the duty. A postie can quite easily make up over an hour of time if:

- they came in 30 minutes early
- they forfeit 20 minute break
- they walk round with a bag on the shoulder instead of using a trolley (5-10 minutes per loop)
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Bang on , I've never claimed so much excess overtime since I've been starting on time , taking meal reliefs & using a trolley , as I like to call it " protecting my job "

It all depends whether you are a runner who comes in early, and cuts every corner available,or you are someone who does the job properly as it should be done. Its a sad fact but RM couldnt give a toss about the customer as long as the job is done as fast as possible and they dont have to pay any overtime.Sheer greed yet again.
