htc parcel amount

Hi,
This is a simple question, but i can understand it will be hard to answer and i cant find anything anywhere, and our union rep is more a royal mail than union.

At Christmas, we have Extra parcel deliveries. So the parcels that are given to the regular drivers are split between two vans.

My first question,

How many parcels are we asked to take? I have been told that we can refuse to take anything over 23, which which we pass on a daily basis.

second,

We have a metal template, if it fits through, you take it in your htc......... This I have been told is from we used Bikes. Does anyone know the size we are required to take in a htc?

So, here are my issues.

At Christmas parcel drivers get support two help with there extra load, BUT postman dont.. At the moment we take out more than 23 so would like that confirmed as at Christmas, we will be taking a lot more parcels and as post persons we get no support.

like i said, our union rep is like a chocolate teapot with eyes on management. I would love to stand up in our regular Huddle and tell them what we are meant to be doing!!

Put as many as you can in your trolley.

Take the rest to your manager and ask him what he wants to do with them. Show him your full trolley if he asks if you can get any more in.

He may say he'll get the excess sent out to you. If so, assess whether it is practical for you to meet with whoever brings them out and bear in mind how long it takes to attempt delivery of packets.

Use the cut off procedure as necessary.

An artificial rule like '23 packets' is facile. You could easily have 23 packets and not be able to fit them and the mail into your trolley. Equally you might have over 30 and get them in.

Isn't it a case of if you can fit them in you do them, if they don't fit you can't do them.

You have to do something called Manage your workload which is a management term. In practice these means place the larger parcels to one side and look to bundle up multi packets for a single address. Then remove these from your deliver to your support driver.

As for the rest fit as many as you can into the front section of the HCT for the roads you will be taking out and the rest in pouches to be dropped off by your support driver whilst you are going round.

Watch the weight of the HCTdoes not increase too high. The max weight of a HCT varies from 77-122 kgs depending on the terrain, the greater the incline on a route the lower the weight etc.

If you still get swamped by packets then seek out your manager. You will normally have 2 choices. He can either take some off you or offer to pay you overtime to deliver them. If you take the overtime you may find that you have to do much smaller loops to cope with the parcels and arrange an extra support drop.

We have bag drops, but if there is a maximum amount we can take, we should take that. I understand that sometimes u may have small parcels and have no issues. It is when busy, u can have 60 parcels, split between htc and bag drops and your parcel driver may not take any for your route.

There is no physical number, certainly not 23.

The amount you can take is limited by the capacity of the trolley, the combined weight of the mail and probably most importantly the capacity of your contracted hours.

Other than that follow the good advice given above.
