CWU leaders are making it out to be a big victory that there will be legal consultation over pensions, and working groups will produce national
agreements on D2D and other changes by April 2008. But the opposite is true. Now is when we are at our strongest, when the threat of strike action still hangs over Royal Mail. Royal Mail has announced that it is intends to close the final salary pension scheme for a career average one, and it wants to raise the retirement age to 65. It has even set a start date for the new scheme: 1 April 2008. So much for “consultationâ€

Whether we vote yes or no in this ballot we all have to fight for an alternative to a worse pension for us and an even worse one for new entrants. Both Royal Mail and CWU HQ are luring us into ready reckoners to see how the proposals will affect us personnally rather looking at ways of keeping a decent pension scheme for all.

I'm abandoning no one. It's the duty of trade unionists to look after others, not crap on those who come after us. Royal Mail and two Governments have decided to steal from our pension. As far as I'm aware, no school kid in this country who will be leaving and looking for a job in the future bears any responsibility for that, so let those responsible put the situation right.

Anyone willing to work till 65 will benefit from pension changes.

Anyone willing to work till 65 but physically incapable through 40years of increasing work-load, doing 50hour weeks in the summer, carrying more and more d2d, will lose thousands of pounds. Who can be sure they will be capable of hard manual labour when they are 64?

Vote YES to loose 40 odd quid per week when you most need it - when u retire.
