If somebody new starts they should be shown the ropes by a WPC, is this also the case for somebody being shown a new duty or someone who has been transferred starting in a new office?

No.

you are postie and you know the job, you can be expected to do any walk at any time without training ( with exception to Rural's and probably firms )

in my office you are given a printed map with the delivery area's marked and someone will help to bundle the walk up.

I believe we should not be with anyone who has had less than 3 days of training with a WPC.
If you're forced to train someone, i say forced I mean when theres no rep around to stop the nonsense demand in writing that you will be paid the training allowance.

It's as big a cost to the business as someone regularly finishing their walk 45 mins early every day or doing 'ghost overtime' covering half walks. I'm sure though, that doesn't apply to you.

Totally agree with that one. A wpc has to set an example or they just leave themselves wide open to criticism.

What on earth is the point of someone who, laughably, has the ridiculous title of "work place coach"?
I started wih RM 6 months ago and have had absolutely no training whatsoever!
I am reasonably intelligent, and have just worked things out for myself as I've gone along, or asked a colleague.
The fact that they get paid extra for being a "work place coach" is a joke, and symptamatic of the state that RM is in as an employer!

I think it is a good idea actuallly. I'm not a WPC but the idea that there is actually a postman, and not an official, that you can approach for advice is good. Sometimes advice OUTSIDE of the box is good

Yes but if it’s like our office managers favourite, thing they now everything when actually they now jack s**t, they help u for about 2 days, then u never see them again they never come round to ask how your doing or give u any help. But the main thing that gets me is they are paid the money weather they are training or not.

In my opinion, RM are wasting their money paying work place coaches every week of the year regardless of whether they are actively training someone or not.

They should only be paid the allowance when they are training someone and there should be a a proper programme to follow and possibly a personal training log completed for each newbie. What RM need to do is create some literature for new starters, e.g. booklets on different kinds of mail, how to use PDA, what needs scanning what doesn't, etc.

The idea behind the increase in WPC was to introduce a program of continual improvement and training, it was driven by that other nonsense Word Class Mail. The flaw was that the recruitment process allows nepotism and did not result in the best candidates being put forward for those positions. We have at least 4 or 5 in our office and only one is any good, unfortunately being a senior guy he's on a business duty which means taking him off to train someone gives management a headache. The rest of them are mates and relations of management and pretty useless posties never mind coaches.

They have a role to play as a go between with the manager and staff on workplace problems/changes. Three days is not enough for part time staff they should come in early for the first week most of the new staff ive worked with do not know about the walk log book posting pegs or hazard cards most do not know we have the use of trolleys. Coaches are doing coaching duties all year thats why they get paid all year i would grab the chance to do it.
