Views on CWU meeting yesterday in Liverpool

To All

I Attended a CWU meeting yesterday in Liverpool with Terry Pullinger and other reps as speakers,

The impression I got was as follows

Mentioned that with RM blocking the strike their could be more grief over local issue's due to RM attitude,

I found that Terry Pullinger came across well and made a lot of sense, as did all the other speakers. He even said that the CWU sometimes do get things wrong. Although he was speaking to the converted.

It seems that RM have try to block the strike on a number of occasions, such as saying that the CWU records of union members didn't tally up, also that once the result was announce that it wasn't put up in a number of office's, the CWU had to prove that this was not the case.

There was a large amount of votes that were received after the closing day. And that we should be proud with a 90% ves vote with over 70% turn out.

They are also trying to get unite on board, Unite recommend a yes vote to their members, and the member's turned down the recommendation, he pointed out that if they said yes then RM would have field day in the press saying that the managers have accepted the pay offer why can't the staff.

Also that in the high court the Labour Shadow minister attended to support the CWU which shows the shift of the Labour party to be seen to support us.

Mentioned about the pension having to be for all, new starters and old. It seems that all the sick pay etc has been withdrawn. Mind you that's only till 2019 and then they will chip away again.

Said that after the mediation of 7 weeks the CWU has to give two weeks notice so you could be looking at the 16th Dec.

Regarding the court case, RM said that they thought that the CWU and members weren't serious about taking I/A. I thought afterwards that if this was case why did RM send us all these letters and message's on the PDA.

Summing up, keep the pressure on RM, they called for the mediation, they should be the one shifting their views.

interesting, so Unite managers have rejected their pay deal too? They are generally as fed up as we are then. Although they still have sold their soul to implement whatever their masters require ultimately.

As I have said months before the vote we should have balloted for action but they could have challenged it at anytime but the ball would have been well and truly in their court at the time.

Thanks, a date of the 16th is bad news. The 16th is a Saturday so basically RM only have to delay a week before Christmas while the courts are closed and the can take their time after Christmas. Striking would even save them cash then, a 4 day week would be great for them!

There is little to no appetite to strike in my office in December. Not to mention the damage it would do to our reputation. It would be unforgivable to our customers. The CWU and people on this forum need to get Striking in December out of their heads. It would be embarrassing. Call a Strike, Nobody strikes. Plus, What is the obsession with striking? We don't want to strike. We want mediation to work and get a result so we can move on. Talk of RM making concessions. Guess what fellas, We are also going to have to make a few ourselves. If not, I am certain they are willing and capable to fight us, grind it out and push through the changes anyway. At best its about damage limitation now.

That was a well thought out argument,not, so do you think we should go back to the 19th century and just accept what our so called betters deem to give us

The point that was made at the meeting was that Royal Mail went to the courts and called for mediation not the CWU, therefore the ball is in there court to make concessions, otherwise what was the point of going to court in the first place.
Royal Mail is also under pressure to come to an agreement, from the government, shareholders, companies that use us to name a few.
