Why do people want to strike
I have heard this a lot from my colleagues, they wanted to strike can’t understand why people would want to lose 2 days pay. I want the thing sorted out but I thing we have to accept the pension scheme is never going to be like it was. Most company have or are changing there pension schemes.
I have heard nothing from management about working 12 to 6 PM only the union is the union trying to course trouble. The problem with RM is we are very slow to change. we are a customer oriented business but we still see the customer as the enemy they want longer openings in callers offices including Sunday opening, they want parcels on Sunday, So to all the people who say i’m Not working Sunday everybody else who works in a customer oriented business like ours works Sunday so why not us
We have to change to move on stay the same and we will sink.

Why do people want to strike
No one wants to strike but you have to be prepared to. I have taken place in several industrial disputes in my time at RM.
Do you ever ask yourself, for example why do I have the standard of living I have? Why do I have a right to vote?
Why do we have a welfare state?
These things haven't just appeared out of the mist they have had been fought for by our forbears some of them have sacrificed their lives. There has always been a battle between capital and labour. Zero hour contracts and the like go back to when people used to queue up outside the gates to see if there was any work that day.
The only power the working class have is to band together and stand in unity this shaw frightens the hell out of our rulers whom use the law, press and police and yes, army to control and suppress us.
Rise up like lions from your slumber, You've nothing to lose but your chains!

strike action is the only way this company will listen because it affects there pockets and they have ignored the cwu and US the workforce to come to a deal , the 89% just shows that posties have had enough of this company taking the piss , b&h is worse than ever and have a not fit for purpose way of dealing with cases in house and unmanageable workloads and they just keep adding more and more and just expect it done , and now they want to rob pensions
, and also expect you to mop up deliverys for sickness and annual leave ( team work ) for nothing , and walk ownership that's another way of franchising deliverys , oh and as for sunday working
, some people have a life away from this company.

At the risk of being lynched on here I have to agree. Having worked in other customer focused industries before joining Royal Mail there is a big reluctance to change which is what culminated in the company being sold off as it was loss making.woody38 wrote:I have heard this a lot from my colleagues, they wanted to strike can’t understand why people would want to lose 2 days pay. I'm not saying agree to Sunday working, of course not, or to agreeing to later starts/finishes but the business does need to make some changes or it will be left behind. The pensions aspect is happening, nothing can or will be done about that regardless of strike action (at the end of the day it's only changing from a defined benefit scheme to a different one, those of you with final salary schemes that is NOT being affected as that is already locked from when it changed years ago. Every major company or local authority I know that used to have final salary has changed to defined benefit and RM already have so that's dead in the water anyway.
Yes, threaten your strike if you think that helps but certain things will change regardless because they need to.

1. This business and its staff have gone through the largest transformation process in its history over the last 10 years from start times through automation to the methods we use to do the job, what was the biggest change you faced in your "customer focused industry"?At the risk of being lynched on here I have to agree. Having worked in other customer focused industries before joining Royal Mail there is a big reluctance to change which is what culminated in the company being sold off as it was loss making.
2. The business wasn't loss making when it was sold, it was making healthy profits.
3. We don't mind different opinions and won't lynch anyone but try to base those opinions on fact.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

What you could and can't do,what can and can't do.
All I remember is you could do earlies, lates, nights and seven days a week.
It was all rotations and do as your told by management and your senior posties
Good days I remember

The fact that the company has seen fit to take us to court in response to a massive strike action vote should make us all even more determined to sock it to this company if necessary.

We are customer focussed, it’s those who are way above us who are out of touch. Alll the customers I speak to going about my daily business lament about the loss of early morning deliveries, that’s what the customer wants, yet it’s the one thing that RM won’t give them No reason to not like change, for the better, but no reason to change for the sake of it. We undergo endless revisions and resigns and pointless expensive project failures like World Class Mail, et al Yet try claiming half an hours overtime see what response you get, however world class mail has millions thrown at it, for what? The idiots in charge buy diesel powered vehicles that are totally unsuited for the type of work we do ( short journies ,stopping and starting) yet the environmentally friendly and low cost , low maintenance bicycle gets dumped. Any wonder some of us are hostile to change?

Why do people want to strike
several people posting about ' what the customer wants ' - unfortunately RM class the customer as the people who pay for the postage and not the people we deliver to. What we as posties regard as our customers, RM just see them as 'delivery points'. RM couldn't give a toss about what the people we deliver to want, they just want to keep large business customers happy.
As for asking why people want to strike, the alternative is to just roll over and let the terms, conditions and pay regress until we are on a par with awful employers like Yodel & Hermes ( RM have already shown they think this job is on a par with cheap parcel delivery companies by using their pay comparisons in the argument ) - This would be nirvana for RM, more PT jobs, less job security and pay rates left to wither - either stand up for yourself or live on your knees ( eventually your knees wil give out and then it's time to live on your belly like a worm ).

I take it you haven't even bothered reading anything about the CWU's proposals. They are suggesting 7am-7pm deliveries, the normal mail delivery early and packet drivers up until late evening. This will secure jobs, rather than the later pipeline RM want which does absolutely nothing for customers or staff, but it will increase RM's profits and shareholder dividends.
Don't be conned into thinking RM is only trying to do what the customer wants, and the big bad CWU are living in the past.
If we lose this dispute, we are finished as far as quality jobs go, and within 5-10 years there will be no RM as we know it and no USO because it's too harmful to profits.
