Yea waste of time should have stayed away.Dave did not get much over really, not all his fault though the presenter kept talking over him.A missed chance to hammer home to the public about the real problems we face.patrickstar14 wrote:Not good Dave you did not explain the full impact for the public at all

Peston: RM worker starting pay £20K pa.
That went unchallenged. No one starts on a full time contract anymore. Most start on 20hrs at a reduced hourly rate.

Wouldn't worry too much about public opinion. Most of them just want dirt cheap prices for a next day service and are not too interested on your and anyone else's terms and conditions and working hours.

Yeah, I thought very poor. It just sounded like us calling a strike on Tuesday which would cock up Christmas for everyone. It also sounded like a it would be a weak yes vote and something the union wanted but the posties didn't.
The whole interview was a bit of a cock up ... and the delay didn't help either. Should have had the Southerner bloke talking from the FB Q&A - he is a much better spokesperson.

Peston is an out and out Tory anyway, he was more interested in whether the new trade union laws would hinder the strike, he's not interested in the plight of the regular working man or woman, and was trying to present that angle from the very start saying things like the "starting salary for a postman is 20k", really, when we have the majority of posties coming into the business on 20 hour contracts, and RM want to make the terms for new-starters even more inferior.

Surely you didn't really expect any sort of sympathetic interview on a Sunday politics show where the union leader expected to lead a national strike is being interviewed by another floppy-haired TV economist?
Up to Ward to put the case across, and he didn't do a very good job.

More like when it comes down to it, he has very little to say to convince the sort of people that watch real.politics show or the Joe public. We do not have much of a case for a strike and worse still, not at this time of the year.
Dave Ward did not challenging the starting salary on their DB pay quote because like most, he is up his derriere about full time, long term posties. A missed opportunity to hammer home the plight of part timers and an increasing part time workforce with very little pension to speak of.
Well, the greatest movers of this dispute are those losing out on their DB pensions and people that do not want to start late.
On the issue of later starts, he is even more useless - saying people want to receive their letters in the morning - how many people? The same silly utterances when RM introduced collection on delivery and stop picking up from some boxes...
It seems some people just want RM to stay the same yet expect play increases and fat pensions - compared to many others. The percentage of people on DB pensions in the country is very low...
Public support will not be there - not in large numbers when they think we all get £20,000, DB pensions, 1.5% pay rise, other trappings including good sick procedure, shares and dividends etc, finish early and are low-skilled...

How do you know he's an out and out Tory? Just because he asked some awkward questions which the interviewee wasn't eloquent,or quick witted enough to answer, doesn't make the interviewer a Tory, it's his job to ask awkward questions. We know he doesn't know anything about our starting pay , but Dave Ward is hardly on a par with us ,with what he earns is he?norm wrote:Peston is an out and out Tory anyway, he was more interested in whether the new trade union laws would hinder the strike, he's not interested in the plight of the regular working man or woman, and was trying to present that angle from the very start saying things like the "starting salary for a postman is 20k", really, when we have the majority of posties coming into the business on 20 hour contracts, and RM want to make the terms for new-starters even more inferior.

I disagree. There's a growing movement of support for pay rises in the public sector. When the CWU turns round and shows a massive wave of support from us, the working class postie, that should embolden everybody else.chrisj wrote:

£20,000 a year is still WELL below the average of £27,000 in the UK.

I don't think posties are classed like nurses, police and fire fighters in the public eyesnorm wrote:I disagree. There's a growing movement of support for pay rises in the public sector. We're providing a service people depend on just the same.
The public should very definitely be on our side to defend service that has a 500 year tradition, not be led in a race to the bottom with the likes of Hermes and Yodel.
