Career break

Post by Lucgeo »

Newbie here :wave

I have looked through the career, sabbatical policies but it is unclear as to shortest length request etc....

The wife took a "lifestyle" break of 8 weeks last year, from her employer, to support a family member. It was unpaid, but
her job was safe.

The way I'm reading our policies, it would seem that we only have "career breaks" whereby my job wouldn't be kept for me, and no guarantee of them finding me anything else?? Also possibility of change of contract, I'm on 35+ years of service

Is there a " lifestyle" break option, I'm looking at about 6weeks unpaid, to support recuperation of elderly parent post-op.

Career Break is , I think , a minimum of a year but for what you're after surely unpaid leave should be able to be taken .

Career break is a minimum of 6months but taking a special unpaid leave to care for a relationship should not be an issue for such a big organisation. Afterall, you are not even costing them money but organising manpower when they have tight resource management is the only problem; especially in Delivery.

I think a Union Official should be able to help you here or read through the special leave stickie - somewhere.

Alternatively, you can ring HR anonymously for clarification on special leave but the ultimate decision will be at your manager's discretion.

Good luck

Scroll through and download the Other Leave document. You are allowed time off to care for relatives but discuss with manager

Thank you both for that. Yes it would seem I could take time off unpaid for "up to six months" I would need to clarify with the management, with my rep present, to ensure that I don't jeopardise my current employment contract, and that I return onthe same terms and conditions, especially as I am one of the few still on part time, 6 on 6 off contract :Very Happy
