Changing the pipeline
A manager In our office mentioned on Saturday that even if a yes vote and strikes take place, RM are still going to change the pipeline regardless.
The problem is we all know it's not for the better or for the customer. It's RM way of cutting costs even more !
Surely H&S will have to come into it and RM workers daily life, I will definitely be leaving and I'm sure many others will follow

Yes, but there will always be people who want things in the mornings too. While RM are right to want to tap the 'next day means next day' market, they also need to be aware that they should not lose the 'morning please' market which also exists.

I actually don't think there are many customers that want or expect morning deliveries anymore. I deliver to plenty of businesses, often after 12pm now and none of them grumble about it.
There were a few complaints when we first went to later start times years ago but I think most customers are resigned to getting their mail later in the day now.

Later in the day means less chance of getting into blocks of flats , there is no need to shift the whole pipeline later in the day for a few parcels , this could be done by adding a couple of late drive duties in each office .

Yes, they're resigned to it. That doesn't mean they wouldn't prefer it earlier.
Hence if RM go to delivery after 12, other companies may well have an opportunity earlier in the day.
A classic business mistake is to concentrate on mimicking your competitors rather than concentrating on your strengths and the things that make you unique.

Yes, but less chance of getting into blocks of flats is manager's problem, not ours.chickenwittle wrote:Later in the day means less chance of getting into blocks of flats , there is no need to shift the whole pipeline later in the day for a few parcels , this could be done by adding a couple of late drive duties in each office .
And it's probably less to do with "a few parcels" than one wave, giving Mail Centres more time and us needing much smaller fittings so that Delivery Offices can be merged and sold off, 'selling the family silver', to boost dividends to share holders for the next couple of years.

That's not my experience on my delivery that includes solicitor's offices, a school, a doctors and a post office. I also still get residential customers that moan when they get a P739 when they've been in all morning then have to go out before their delivery is attempted post midday.'wacko74 wrote:I actually don't think there are many customers that want or expect morning deliveries anymore. It's got nothing to do with tapping in to the parcels market. It's all about removing indoor work from delivery offices and making the Mail Centres do it thus making our deliveries longer to make up the shortfall in hours. That's why the CWU want a 35 hour week to combat fatigue and workload that would occur if this goes ahead.
Working till 5pm doesn't mean people will get parcels delivered, in fact you'll probably be bringing most of them back and that's if you got the time to deliver them in the first place.

We are jointly responsible along with the employer, in our case Royal Mail, for our Health and Safety so what is to stop us all cutting off in winter when the
light is fading and bringing the remainder of our walks back because it is getting dark, we cannot see to deliver down paths to front doors safely. Also if on an unfamiliar walk not being able to see numbers on houses. Our caring employer may provide a torch but I'm guessing we are going to have our hands full with 95% sequenced mail, plus 5% manual plus D2Dr's along with a PDA
Before anyone jumps in and replies that back in the day when they started deliveries really early it was dark, I remember them too having been on deliveries over 32 years but back then it may have been dark BUT it was always getting lighter

Unless the new machines can actually sequence flats and letters together, the indoor work will still be just the same. If the new machines can only walk sort, then you'll proabably end up with 3-4 walks mixed up in a boxPhantom wrote:It's got nothing to do with tapping in to the parcels market. The work will come into inwards MCs later so will be processed later and therefore go out to DOs later. RM aren't going to have separate runs just for them few parcels, they struggle for drivers as it is so probably wouldn't be able to staff late drive duties unless the DOs provide the drivers for late drive dutieschickenwittle wrote:Later in the day means less chance of getting into blocks of flats , there is no need to shift the whole pipeline later in the day for a few parcels , this could be done by adding a couple of late drive duties in each office .

We're meant to be changing coz that's what the competition are doing. Well i see plenty of parcel delivery firms vans out at 9am ,ups, DPD, you name it. We'll all still be having our breakfast!wacko74 wrote:I actually don't think there are many customers that want or expect morning deliveries anymore. the whole thing is about them saving money and massive job losses
, so by starting later in deliverys getting out at 12 or whatever they want that will open the market for companys to deliver early mornings 7 - 12 say , so we lose on that and what about 9am - 1pm specials which is the all singing and dancing money earners , they will go as well , these people running the company are clueless .

You are quite right, they are clueless,we are indeed lions ,led by donkeys. I have said it before and I will say it again, there is more than enough work to complement and enhance the existing model of delivery,so why not recruit people to do these packets, that are wanted the next day? Or are we suddenly not talking about that many?worktotime wrote:the whole thing is about them saving money and massive job losses, so by starting later in deliverys getting out at 12 or whatever they want that will open the market for companys to deliver early mornings 7 - 12 say , so we lose on that and what about 9am - 1pm specials which is the all singing and dancing money earners , they will go as well , these people running the company are clueless .
