Rumour circulating in our office is depite the ballot and whatever the vote turns out to be, RM are wanting to change us to Mon - Fri 9am til 5pm taking away the rotation week off.

I really like that rumour but would prefer 06.30-14.30

That piece of wishful thinking has been floating about for years.

While a move to later starts and a 4.30 or 5 finish is certainly on the cards, the idea that most staff will work only Mon-Fri is a fantasy as RM would need to cover Saturdays also.

8:03 to 16:03 duty spans up in our office. Reality is that most will finish after this and as we are North of Scotland the last hour is going to be fun in the dark. No chance now that people will stay out longer to clear the Xmas rush or work their day off.

Well, it would be nice not having to Finnish on a Saturday because we didn't even start on a Saturday

A yes vote is definitely going to happen, all it will do is keep our current attendance times etc for a year then we will be in the same boat. If our union is so worried about our future then they can pay our wages while we strike, they have the funds to do so but wouldn't in a million years. RM know the vast majority of posties can not afford to strike for any more than 2-3 days and have contingency plans to cover this. When we resume after the strike all that will happen is our frames will be full and day by day we will have to chip away at the mail until we clear.

The bigger picture that needs addressing is RM will get what they want eventually, a strike could even bring that forward

USO review is near and if that goes we are all in deep sh*t. 9am starts, finishing in the pitch black and finally franchised walks. RM knows the pay is better than what most current employees can expect elsewhere so all will be forced to comply.

The CWU should have brought in clock in machines years ago as I feel that would have strengthened their case. If the workload is unmanageable this would have been highlighted and could have nipped this in the bud a long time ago. However, as a lot of posties do not work all the hours they are paid (which is said to be a key agreement with the union) RM think there is meat on the bone to chew on. If every postie worked exactly the hours they are paid for which is what pretty much every other employee in the world does we would not be having this argument and we would not be sacrificing our own pay to get a message across.

I also can't get this out of my head, will Terry Pulinger, Dave Ward, all the div reps etc and various cronies not get paid for the days we are on strike? You can assure yourself they won't go short so why are we asked to sacrifice our families security? If you could promise we would get a deserved pay rise and decent pensions i'd be all for it but we are often warned to be careful what you wish for!

I hadn't realised that clocking in and out machines, which I with a round that can't properly be done in the hours would welcome, was an issue in this dispute.

I can't speak for what happens in Wimbledon but might expect Terry and Dave to donate their pay for any strike day into the strike fund.

I can't understand that tho. I took the kids and did a car boot the other week - made a day's wage.

If I had lovefilm or amazon prime or Netflix I'd cancel that right about now.

I could be wrong but I don't believe that those posties who I hear daily pleading poverty regarding a strike actually have any clue about what real poverty is.

Guys, we will see how long posties are prepared to stay out on strike for very soon. I am fine as im guessing you are all too but the harsh reality of life is not many others will be. I have read another thread on here with a lot of colleagues surprised about the average £25k wage. If that is a good wage to aspire to then my point is made even more. Unless the majority of posties live in a council house with minimal rent to pay then the reality is they will not be able to afford to strike for an extended period of time. That weakens our position against RM. If the union subsidised our lost income then RM would panic but the people in charge know that this will be for 2-3 days max, get through that and the battle is won. Have a think about that before you speak for the whole workforce next time?
