Can a Dom put you on unpaid leave instead of sick without your consent? Think I know the answer but an official one would help. Thanks.

Did you follow the absence procedure and phone in sick before the start of work?

Yes they knew i was going off (family matters stress) . Not once did they mention you have been granted special leave which will be unpaid, not that I requested it anyway. I have an excellent sick record btw. Well if you went off with stress is should be sick pay. But if you went off due to a family crisis in theory they could class it as domestic stress and dealt with it as special leave? Might be worth speaking to your union rep about this but it does sound a bit of a grey area. Of course any DOM worth anything would make it clear but many seem to think they can do what they like. 
I had an issue where there was damage done to my house and I advised the DOM immediately that I would not be in the following day. He said it would be unpaid leave which I wasn't bothered as I had problems enough getting things sorted (he also said could I ring round and get people to agree to cover it, how caring that was of him whilst I was knee deep in rubble and surrounded by policemen!
) Anyway when I did go back the union guy had heard what happened and got me paid in full, so give them a try!
