Owning the Workload
Not sure if this is worthy of it's own thread, it's just my anecdotal observations.
So with all this talk of of walk ownership aka ''owning the workload'' I've been keeping a closer eye on my hours and finishing times these last few weeks...
The traffic figures for my D.O. showed that the last 2 weeks in August were the lowest mail volumes for the year to date, over those 2 weeks I did get a few early finishes totalling 1hr 20mins for 1 week and 1hr 30mins for the other week.
So that's an overall ''gain'' for me of 2hrs 50mins over 10 working days during the 2 lightest weeks of the year.
We're now in the first week of Sept and mail & pkt volumes are back to normal ''non summer'' levels and I've already booked 5 hrs 15mins ext del in only 4 working days.
RM must think we're really stupid if they honestly expect us to believe that the light days and heavy days ''even out'' when it comes to ''owning the workload''.

Royal mail are looking to outsource the risk to maximise profit.

F*ck that. Packets filled the van up the the roof today - we streamed every bag, took 5 boxes of mail back and still went 20 minutes over!

Most part-timers in our office do regular overtime. Owning the workload would in theory be much less of a problem for them. They don't have enough hours anyway so doing an extra hour or two on bad days shouldn't be a problem for them. i.e. if you are on a 5 hour/day contract and you regularly do extra to up your hours to 8.
... then when its all done, the next round of cuts start ... :(

That is the thing - you wouldn't be paid ANY overtime! You would be responsible for the workload whether it is a hundred items or a couple of thousand items and if it takes you 10 hours to complete.... well, what are you waiting for, you better make a start!Spedley wrote:Most part-timers in our office do regular overtime. So just a quick update/summary on my 4 week trial period of ''owning the workload''
As already said, the last 2 weeks in Aug were the lightest 2 weeks of the year according to our office traffic figures and over 10 working days I ''gained'' 2 hrs 50 mins through early finishes.
The first 2 weeks of Sept have been ''model weeks'' i.e. average mail volumes and I've booked a total of 10 hrs 30 mins ext del over 10 working days, with no early finishes at all.
(This is based on a 30 hour contract, 5x6 hr days)
Doesn't really suggest to me that the light days and heavy days would ''even themselves out'' as RM claim is the case.

This is the main reason why i'm voting YES in the ballot. I'm on a 5 x 5hr contract and there's no way I'm having this. If it comes in, I'm off. Imagine the arguments between F/T and P/T about how much extra each should do when anyone in their group is off sick. Mark my words there will literally be fist fights breaking out between F/timers and P/Timers over this if RM manage to get this brought in.wacko74 wrote:So just a quick update/summary on my 4 week trial period of ''owning the workload''

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but any day our figures "drop" and the mail is VERY light (rare now though), we seem to get hit bad with a bulk mailing from one(of several) customers. It's as if RM have planned for such days to minimise any "gains" for OPGs.

If it's mech letters then maybe RM are doing that to ensure that the capacity exists to sequence it otherwise it would just get sent to the DOs as manualscoobymunster wrote:Maybe it's just a coincidence, but any day our figures "drop" and the mail is VERY light (rare now though), we seem to get hit bad with a bulk mailing from one(of several) customers. QUESTION
Where does it actually say no overtime will be paid for going over when 'owning the workload'?

Admittedly the whole issue of ''owning the workload'' is just speculation at the moment, but you're being a little naive If you can't see that this would be the ultimate aim of it.answer=42 wrote:QUESTION

If you're part-time, there's 5 hours in your day.
If you're full-time, there's just under 8.
No-one can make you work a minute over that, if you don't want to.
Everyone should calm down is my opinion.
